Brighton and Hove Albion 's promising goalkeeping star, Carl Rushworth , has departed the club for around £22.5 million plus £7.5 million in instalments.
Rushworth spent the season on loan at Coventry last season, keeping the most clean sheets (17) in their Championship title-winning season. The Sky Blues return to the Premier League for the first time in 25 years. Quite hilariously, they were promoted on the same day as Brighton were back in 2017, 17th April 2026.
The 25-year-old goalkeeper is an exciting talent. Someone who could potentially be one of the most significant goalkeepers in the pecking order for England in years to come. Known for his ability with the ball at his feet and incredible shot-stopping saves, Rushworth has made a name for himself at every club he has spent time on loan at. From back when he was at Worthing FC, Albion fans were assured that they had a special player on their hands.
Perhaps from a Brighton perspective, that part remains the same. Inserting a first refusal clause is a very smart piece of business, especially if Coventry are to be relegated straight away. Bart Verbruggen has been linked with a move away throughout the entirety of the summer transfer window, but since Manuel Neuer is set to remain at Bayern Munich for another season, it is no wonder that Rushworth is seeking regular and guaranteed game time at a club that already loves him.
Verbruggen is younger than Rushworth and has significantly more top-flight experience, having played 119 club games in the Belgian Pro League and the Premier League combined. He also has an impressive 33 caps for his nation, the Netherlands, at just 23-years of age.
As well as this, Rushworth has been on loan for almost every season since he arrived at the club back in 2019, and at 25, wanting to move on for a more permanent future makes a lot of sense for him as a player and a person. He is at the stage of his career where he has earned his right to be starting in the Premier League. Achieving such status in a timely manner last season.
Having worked through the leagues, we truly wish him all the best in his debut season in the Premier League, and to be honest, he could even become another one of those players who got away a bit too soon. If it wasn't for Verbruggen, we could well have seen Rushworth starting for the Seagulls this season.
