Cowboys rework Prescott, Lamb, Smith contracts to get under salary cap
March 4 (UPI) -- The Dallas Cowboys restructured the contracts of Pro Bowl quarterback Dak Prescott, wide receiver CeeDee Lamb and left guard Tyler Smith , a league source told UPI on Wednesday.
With the move, the Cowboys are set to clear about $66 million in salary cap space. The Cowboys were about $55 million over the $301.2 million cap before the restructures.
Prescott, 32, signed a four-year, $240 million contract extension with the Cowboys in 2024. Lamb, 26, signed a four-year, $136 million extension in 2024. They both restructured those deals last off-season. Smith, 24, signed a four-year, $96 million extension in September.
The Cowboys, who placed the franchise tag on wide receiver George Pickens this off-season, have until July 15 to sign the wide receiver to a long-term contract, which would create more space to spend.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said last week that he also plans to rework the deals of defensive lineman Quinnen Williams , Kenny Clark and Osa Odighizuwa .
"The only way to push more is for me to go borrow some of my future [money," Jones told reporters at the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis . "Expect me to go borrow some of my future."
NFL free agency will start at 4 p.m. EST March 11, the first day of the new league year. The negotiating window, or legal tampering period, begins at noon Monday.
