- Craig Bellamy Answered Months of Criticism Over Wales by Finally Beating a Nations League A Team
-
Wales beat Norway 2-1 in Cardiff to win a Nations League A game for the first time, coming back from an early Erling Haaland-assisted goal to do it.
-
Craig Bellamy used his post-match comments to address criticism of himself and his squad, saying people "could be kinder to each other" after a run that had produced no win in the group.
-
Neco Williams scored the decisive goal from a free-kick after Norway's Torbjorn Heggem was sent off 15 seconds into the second half, and said the squad had worked in training to fix what went wrong in the first two games.
Bellamy Had Heard the Noise, and He Finally Had an Answer for It
Craig Bellamy did not wait to be asked about the criticism. Wales had just beaten Norway 2-1, their first win in this Nations League A group, and the Wales manager used the moment to say something that had nothing to do with the scoreline. "I do think we could be kinder to each other," he said. Then he added, plainly: "I've given everything for my country."

It is an unusual thing for a manager to say right after a win. But this was not an ordinary win. Wales had not taken three points in Group A4 before Friday, and Neco Williams, the man who scored the goal that beat Norway, admitted afterward that "the first two games wasn't us." Bellamy's players had heard the same noise their manager had, and on a night when Norway arrived at Cardiff City Stadium with Erling Haaland in their forward line, Wales answered it together.
Norway Led Early, Then Wales Hit Back Twice in Four Minutes
Norway scored first. In the 11th minute, Oscar Bobb finished off a pass from Martin Odegaard to put the visitors ahead, and for a spell it looked like the same pattern that had left Wales without a win in the group. Norway then lost Ryerson to injury in the 17th minute, a blow that would matter later as Wales grew into the game.
Wales equalized in the 38th minute. Daniel James finished off a pass from Sorba Thomas to make it 1-1, and Cardiff City Stadium came alive. Then, barely a minute into the second half, Norway's Torbjorn Heggem fouled James and was shown a straight red card. Wales had a free-kick, a one-man advantage, and the momentum. Neco Williams stepped up and converted it in the 48th minute, just ten minutes after James's equalizer, to put Wales ahead 2-1.

Haaland, Norway's biggest threat, had two clear chances to level the game again, in the 59th and 81st minutes. He converted neither. Wales held on, and the final whistle confirmed a result that put them above Norway in the group table on the night.
"We Knew the First Two Games Wasn't Us"
Williams was direct about where Wales had gone wrong before this. "We knew the first two games wasn't us," he said. "We analysed, we were looking at what went wrong in the first two games. We worked in training and we had to put that right." Beating a team with Haaland in it, he said, mattered beyond the three points. "It's massive for us," Williams said. "We can do it against these top nations."
Bellamy was careful not to overstate what one result meant. "It's our first win in Group A so that's important for us confidence-wise as well," he said. "I'm not going to sit here and say, 'This is where we belong' because we know how tough it is. But you can call them elite. We played well and we looked aggressive."

That balance, satisfaction with the performance without pretending the group suddenly got easier, ran through everything Bellamy said afterward. Wales are still working out exactly where they stand in a group built around some of the best players in European football. But for one night, with Haaland on the opposing team sheet and a red card tilting the game their way at the right moment, Wales looked like a team that belonged in the conversation rather than one just trying to survive it.
Why Bellamy's Comments Landed Differently This Time
Bellamy's remark about kindness was not a complaint about any one person or outlet. He did not name anyone, and he did not dwell on it. He said it once, briefly, and moved back to talking about his team's performance. But the fact that he raised it at all, unprompted, in the glow of a result his side needed, said something about how the winless start to the group had weighed on the camp.
Managers who are winning rarely feel the need to ask for kindness. Bellamy's Wales side had gone into this international window without a win in Nations League A, in a group that includes Norway and Haaland, one of the most dangerous forwards in the world. Two difficult results can turn into a narrative quickly, and Bellamy's comment suggested he had felt that narrative building around him and his squad before Friday's win arrived to interrupt it.

What It Means for the Rest of the Group
Wales' win over Norway will not decide Group A4 on its own, but it changes the tone heading into the rest of the international window. A side that had taken no points now has three, against an opponent that includes one of the sport's most feared finishers. Williams's description of the response, analysing what went wrong, correcting it in training, and then producing a performance strong enough to beat Norway, is the version of events Wales will want to carry forward.
For Haaland, the night was a rare one in which he could not find a way through. Two clear sight of goal, in the 59th and 81st minutes, both went unconverted, and Norway's European-level front line had no answer for a Wales team playing with the kind of aggression Bellamy described. Ryerson's early injury did not help Norway's cause either, forcing a reshuffle at a point when they were already trying to protect a one-goal lead.
None of that guarantees anything for Wales going forward. Bellamy himself was the one who stopped short of declaring his team's arrival among the group's elite. But after a start to the campaign that had clearly bothered both the manager and his players enough for both to address it publicly, a win of this kind, over a team with Haaland in it, with a touch of controversy and a sending-off thrown in, gave Wales something they did not have on Thursday: proof, in Williams's words, that "we can do it against these top nations."

A Group That Does Not Forgive a Slow Start
Nations League A exists for exactly the kind of margins Wales found on Friday night. Finish well in this group and the route to a future tournament gets easier; finish poorly and a team can be relegated out of the top tier entirely. That stakes-driven structure is part of why Bellamy's players, by Williams's own account, spent time between matches analysing what had gone wrong rather than simply moving on to the next fixture. A winless start in a group built around a player of Haaland's profile is the kind of thing that can define a campaign long before it ends, which is precisely why this result mattered as much for what it prevented as for what it produced.
Haaland remains one of the most feared finishers anywhere in the sport, which is exactly what made Friday notable. A forward with his record does not often go through a full match without scoring, let alone with two separate clear sight of goal. Wales will not read too much into one quiet night from him, and neither, in fairness, did Bellamy. But a defense that can contain one of the best strikers alive for ninety minutes, on top of a response that came from being behind, is the kind of evidence a squad can point back to the next time results threaten to turn into the same narrative Bellamy addressed on Friday.
