The Chicago Cubs are in a nightmarish tailspin that has taken them from first place in the National League Central to third place.
After playing some of the best baseball in the Major Leagues through the first six weeks of the season, the Cubs have lost 12 of 14 games and are struggling in all areas of the game.
They were just swept at home by the lowly Houston Astros and they are currently on an eight-game losing streak. This is a team that had two 10-game winning streaks earlier in the season.
Manager Craig Counsell has seen his hard-hitting team go into an offensive slump. The Cubs are also considered one of the best defensive teams in the big leagues, but they have had difficulties fielding in recent games. Additionally, the Cubs pitching staff has been giving up too many home runs, and that may be Counsell's biggest concern.
The Cubs allowed three home runs in Sunday's 8-5 loss to the Astros, and that long ball parade was the biggest reason for their latest loss .
"We've have got to prevent homers better," Counsell said. "If you give up the number of homers you're giving up it's a problem. It is tough to win games when you are giving up the number of home runs we are giving up."
While the Cubs were hitting the ball well earlier in the year, they have struggled to score runs during their slump. Counsell needs Alex Bregman , Pete Crow-Armstrong , Ian Happ and Seiya Suzuki to step up and take some of the pressure off of the pitching staff.
