Cree Thomas emerging as breakout star in spring camp

Colorado football has had several standouts during spring camp, but perhaps none bigger than cornerback Cree Thomas, a transfer from Notre Dame.

He has been a turnover machine, opening camp with five interceptions through the first two practices. Now, through eight practices, those numbers are even higher per new cornerbacks coach Aaron Fletcher.

"He's got a point to prove," Fletcher said at Wednesday's media session. "In his mind, he was refused. He wasn't the best. He was overlooked. He's finding those ways to challenge himself and finding those ways to create advantages for himself."

Thomas agrees with his position coach's sentiment and added that he wants to be part of the culture shift in Boulder.

"I just wanted to be apart of the culture shift and go win some games here," Thomas said. "I know that I can play, I'm plaaying with confidence."

Thomas learned from one of the best cornerbacks in the country last season in Notre Dame's Leornard Moore. Now he is thrilled to learn from arguably the best cornerback ever to play the game, Deion Sanders.

Why did Cree Thomas choose Colorado?

"First of all, you get the opportunity to learn from Coach Prime," Thomas said. "He's the greatest to ever do it at my position. I feel like they're gonna put me in positions to play to my strengths. Playing press man, that's something that I'm confident in. And I love Boulder. I loved the city when I came on a visit, so that's why I decided to come here."

Colorado's secondary should be significantly better than it was last year, despite the losses of star safety Tawfiq Byard and DJ McKinney.

"It really is a new room that we have here," Fletcher said. "Overall, the experience is coming from [James Madison transfer Justin Eaglin]. A lot of youth but a lot of athleticism and potential."
