Roberto Martinez has explained how Cristiano Ronaldo 's superstar status changes once he enters Portugal 's national team environment.
The comment matters because Ronaldo is still one of the biggest names in world football, even at a stage where every international role he plays is heavily debated.

Martinez did not diminish Ronaldo's legacy. Instead, he drew a line between the global icon people see from the outside and the squad member Portugal works with inside camp.

Cristiano Ronaldo becomes one of the group with Portugal
In an Antena 1 interview, Roberto Martinez said Cristiano Ronaldo's world football status does not change how he fits into Portugal's team structure.
"He is an example. He is the reference of world football and a player of the National Team. They are two different figures, but when the National Team is together, he is just a football player," Martinez said.

That answer was not an insult. Martinez was making the point that Portugal cannot function if one player, even Ronaldo, is treated as bigger than the collective.
Ronaldo's name brings attention, pressure, and expectation every time Portugal gathers. But inside the squad, Martinez wants the focus on work, roles, and standards.
That is why the phrase "just a football player" stands out. It strips away the noise around Ronaldo and places him back into the same team environment as everyone else.
Cristiano Ronaldo's hunger still impresses Roberto Martinez
Martinez also made it clear that Ronaldo's place in the group remains valuable because of what he brings every day, not just because of what he has done in the past.

"He is very intelligent, he is the captain and shows commitment to the National Team that is exemplary, it is incredible, the hunger of Cristiano," the Portugal boss added.
That is the balance Martinez is trying to strike. Ronaldo is not above the squad, but he is still an example within it.
His leadership comes through his professionalism, preparation, and continued desire to play for Portugal despite already holding one of the greatest international careers in football history.
For Martinez, that hunger seems to matter more than reputation alone. Ronaldo's status may guarantee attention, but his commitment keeps him relevant inside the dressing room.

The message was clear. Portugal respects Ronaldo's legacy, but the team still needs him to operate like a player, captain, and worker inside the group.
