What's at Stake
Croatia arrive at Lincoln Financial Field on three points after one win and one defeat from their opening two group games, knowing that only victory keeps their last-16 ambitions firmly in their own hands. Ghana sit on four points in second place — level on points with group leaders England but behind on goal difference — and a draw here would most likely be enough to see them through to the knockout rounds. A Croatia win coupled with a Panama result elsewhere could reshuffle the entire group, so there is genuine jeopardy in both dugouts for this Group L showdown.

Verdict
Croatia to win is the headline pick, available at 4/5 with leading operators, backed by their superior tournament pedigree and a Ghana side that has yet to score in their last two competitive outings against top opposition. With the Croatians needing all three points and Zlatko Dalic's side historically ruthless in must-win group games, that price carries genuine appeal for a side of their calibre.
Croatia vs Ghana Match Preview
This World Cup 2026 Group L fixture is, in essence, a straight shootout between a team chasing the game and a team that would happily play for a point. Croatia have the greater motivation, sitting third in the group and knowing that anything less than a win leaves them dependent on other results. Their campaign has been turbulent — a heavy 4-2 defeat to England on Matchday 1 before a grinding 1-0 victory over Panama — but there are signs that Dalic's side are finding their footing just in time.

Ghana, managed by the experienced Carlos Queiroz, have been quietly impressive. A 1-0 win over Panama on Matchday 1 was followed by a disciplined goalless draw with England, a result that underlined their defensive organisation and their ability to frustrate more heralded opposition. Queiroz is a coach who has spent his entire international career building difficult-to-beat structures, and you would expect no different here against a Croatia side that must come at them.
The contrast in styles makes for a fascinating tactical puzzle. Croatia will need Luka Modric , now 40 years old and approaching 200 international caps, to dictate the tempo and unlock a Ghana rearguard that has conceded just once across two World Cup games. For Ghana, the game plan writes itself: stay compact, hit on the counter, and trust that their pacey forwards can punish any Croatian over-commitment.
Team Form
Croatia Recent Form
– Panama (A): Won 1-0 (World Cup)
– England (A): Lost 2-4 (World Cup)
– Slovenia (H): Won 2-1 (Friendly)
– Belgium (H): Lost 0-2 (Friendly)
– Brazil (N): Lost 1-3 (Friendly)
Croatia's form across the full five-match window is patchy, with three defeats, but context matters. Two of those losses came against Brazil and Belgium in pre-tournament friendlies, and the 4-2 defeat to England was their only competitive reverse before they responded with a controlled win over Panama. Their qualifying campaign — seven wins and one draw from eight matches, scoring 26 goals — shows they retain the ability to dominate lower-quality opposition, which is relevant when assessing this game.

Ghana Recent Form
– England (A): Drew 0-0 (World Cup)
– Panama (H): Won 1-0 (World Cup)
– Wales (A): Drew 1-1 (Friendly)
– Mexico (A): Lost 0-2 (Friendly)
– Germany (A): Lost 1-2 (Friendly)
Ghana's form is a study in resilience rather than flair. Their two competitive results in this tournament have been excellent — a clean sheet against England being the standout — but their attacking output of just one goal in two World Cup games is a concern. The losses to Mexico and Germany in the build-up were against testing opposition away from home, and Queiroz would not be losing sleep over those. What he will want to see in Philadelphia is more of the same defensive discipline, and perhaps a touch more adventure going forward.

Croatia vs Ghana Team News
Croatia's squad is a blend of world-class experience and emerging quality. Luka Modric remains the heartbeat of the team, with Mateo Kovacic and Mario Pasalic providing cover and athleticism in midfield. Josko Gvardiol is the standout defender, bringing his elite-level Manchester City form to the tournament backline. Andrej Kramaric is the senior striker option and Croatia's most prolific scorer in recent qualifying, while Ivan Perisic adds wide threat and experience. Martin Baturina and Petar Sucic represent the next generation, with both having contributed positively in matches so far at this tournament.
For Ghana, Thomas Partey 's fitness and form at holding midfield is central to everything Queiroz wants to do defensively. Jordan Ayew captains the side and provides leadership up front, while the pace of Abdul Fatawu and Kamaldeen Sulemana on the flanks gives Ghana a genuine counter-attacking weapon. Antoine Semenyo , listed as a midfielder in the squad but capable of operating in a more advanced role, adds versatility. Caleb Yirenkyi has already opened his account at this tournament and will be an attacking threat from midfield.
Neither side has any publicly confirmed absences heading into Matchday 3, and both squads appear to be at or near full strength, which gives managers the luxury of selectional variety for what is effectively a decisive group fixture.

Predicted Lineups
Croatia (4-3-3): Livakovic; Stanisic, Caleta-Car, Gvardiol, Pongracic; Kovacic, Modric (c), Mario Pasalic; Vlasic, Kramaric, Perisic
Ghana (4-2-3-1): Ati-Zigi; Seidu , Opoku , Mensah, Baba; Partey, E. Owusu; Semenyo, Yirenkyi, Sulemana; Jordan Ayew (c)
Predicted XIs — squads to be confirmed.
Key Tactical Matchup
The most compelling duel in this fixture is Luka Modric against Thomas Partey in the centre of the pitch. Modric, with 198 caps, operates as Croatia's tempo-setter and the fulcrum through which virtually all their best attacking moves run. Partey, capped 57 times and carrying 15 international goals, is at his best as a disruptive presence who can win the ball and quickly transition. If Partey can limit Modric's time on the ball and force Croatia to play more directly, it suits Ghana's game plan perfectly. But if Modric gets into his rhythm in the Philadelphia heat, Croatia have the quality in the final third to break down even the most organised back four.

Main Pick: Croatia to Win @ 4/5
Croatia's superior World Cup pedigree and the sheer necessity of three points makes them the pick here. Dalic's side reached the final in 2018 and took third place in 2022, and this group of players has shown repeatedly that they rise to high-stakes moments. Ghana are well-organised, but they have yet to score in their last two competitive outings against top-level opposition, and Croatia at their best — with Modric pulling the strings — are a different proposition to either England or Panama.

Goals Market: Under 2.5 Goals @ 4/6
The Under 2.5 goals market at 4/6 is a strong secondary selection. Ghana have conceded just once across two World Cup games and are tactically set up to absorb pressure. Croatia, despite their 4-2 mauling by England, were tight defensively against Panama. Queiroz's side are unlikely to open up and chase the game, and with Croatia likely to be patient and measured rather than reckless, a low-scoring match looks the most probable outcome.
Scorer Market: Andrej Kramaric to Score Anytime
Kramaric is Croatia's most reliable scorer and has been among their most consistent attacking performers in recent campaigns. With 36 international goals to his name, he is always a threat in the box. Croatia will need goals in Philadelphia, and Kramaric's movement and finishing inside the area make him the natural focal point of their attack. He scored from the spot against Panama and will be central to Croatia's attacking plan.

Bet Builder: Croatia Win + Under 3.5 Goals
Combining a Croatia victory with under 3.5 goals in the match offers a tidy bet builder option. Ghana's defensive structure, combined with Croatia's likely measured approach to opening up a compact low block, points to a narrow winning margin rather than a goal fest. A 1-0 or 2-0 Croatia win looks the most likely scenario, and this combination captures both outcomes cleanly.
