CSUB Basketball's Lee adds 2 coaches, retains Wrapp; CIF Boys Tennis; CSUB Baseball win streak is 3
New Cal State Bakersfield men’s basketball head coach Todd Lee hired two assistant coaches who have worked with him before and he will retain CSUB alumnus, player and assistant coach Brent Wrapp, CSUB Athletics announced in a press release on Wednesday.
Lee is adding Chris Crevelone and Eddie Hill to his coaching staff. Both will have the job title of associate head coach. Wrapp played for the Roadrunners and served five years as their director of basketball operations before becoming an assistant in 2023.
Lee, who previously coached in the Big West Conference for eight seasons as a top assistant at UC Irvine, welcomes a group of coaches with similar experience with the league, a huge asset in his estimation.
“I really like the different qualities and talents that each coach brings to our program,” Lee said. “Eddie has been an associate head coach in the Big West. Chris has also coached in the Big West at CSUB and brings great experience as well. Brent was a really good player here at CSUB on some very successful teams.
“All of our coaches are first and foremost really good people,” Lee continued, “that care about developing young men on and off the court. They also really love being a part of this great community and believe in the potential and championship tradition of our program. They all have coached in the league for multiple years and know what it takes to be successful in the Big West.”
Crevelone has nearly 20 years of coaching experience, returning to CSUB after previously serving on staff from 2020-24. During his time in Bakersfield, he played a key role in recruiting and player development, helping the program produce five all-conference selections, including future NBA player Taze Moore, and multiple academic all-conference honorees.
Crevelone also spent seven seasons as an assistant coach at Grand Canyon University, where he coached alongside Lee, helping guide the Antelopes to multiple 20-win seasons and success in the Western Athletic Conference.
He also gained experience at the University of Texas, working in video operations while assisting with scouting and recruiting efforts. During Crevelone’s four years in Austin, the Longhorns advanced to three NCAA tournaments and posted an 88-50 (.638) overall record.
Hill, with over 30 years of success in the basketball and recruiting worlds, joins a CSUB program with great familiarity with the Big West. Last season, Hill served as associate head coach for Campbell University, guiding the Fighting Camels to the CAA semifinals. Hill spent the three seasons prior as the associate head coach for UC Riverside, managing all aspects of program development. Hill also served the 2021-22 season as an assistant coach at the University of South Dakota under Todd Lee, where he helped guide the Yotes to a 19-12 record. Hill began his coaching career at the University of Portland, which began a seven-year span working with NCAA programs from the West Coast as well as UTEP.
Wrapp’s retainment comes as he is closing in on a decade of coaching experience with the ’Runners. In 2018, Wrapp tied a bow on a storied career during which he led CSUB to its first NCAA Tournament appearance at the Division I level (2015-16), guided the ’Runners to their first WAC regular-season title and the NIT Semifinal in Madison Square Garden (2016-17), and tied Bakersfield’s all-time career assists record (520, Kenny Warren).
“Brent brings a great perspective, having been a really good player here at CSUB,” Lee said. “He has been in Bakersfield for 12 years now and really loves CSUB and this community. Brent has the record for all-time assists at CSUB and played on some very good teams. He is also really good at player development, which is the cornerstone of our program.”
HS BOYS TENNIS PLAYOFFS
The Stockdale and Bakersfield high school boys tennis teams handily won their Division 1 first-round playoff matches and have advanced to today’s second round.
Their respective 8-1 wins moved them into road matches with teams who had a first-round bye. Stockdale now plays the division’s No. 1 seed, Clovis North. The Drillers, meanwhile, went from hosting and defeating No. 10 Liberty to traveling across town to face a familiar foe, No. 2 seed and South Yosemite Valley League counterpart Bakersfield Christian.
In Division 2, both local teams will have their first match of the playoffs today. No. 3 Centennial is hosting No. 6 Sanger and the No. 1 seed, Frontier, is hosting No. 8 Immanuel, a 7-2 winner over No. 9 Templeton.
In Division 3, West advanced following a 5-4 home victory over Mission College Prep on Tuesday. The Vikings’ reward for winning is a road match today against No. 1 San Joaquin Memorial. In Tuesday’s other match with a local team, No. 12 Wasco’s team season came to a close in a 9-0 loss to No. 5 Reedley.
The Division 4 playoff bracket saw three local teams advance and two eliminated. No. 5 Independence took care of No. 12 Hanford West 8-1. Next up is a road test at No. 4 Dinuba today. The latter reached the second round by blanking No. 13 Delano 9-0. In a battle of two area teams, No. 3 Foothill also got a 9-0 decision over No. 14 Tehachapi. No. 6 Ridgeview topped No. 11 Exeter 6-3, and that sets up another all-local playoff match with Foothill hosting Ridgeview today.
The Division 5 playoff action on Tuesday included four locals seeking to reach the next round. No. 5 R.F. Kennedy, last year’s D-5 team title runner-up, defeated No. 9 Golden West 6-3. The Thunderbirds will now play at No. 1 seed Madera South. In other D-5 action, Cesar Chavez advanced with a 6-3 win over No. 11 Santa Maria and travels to play No. 3 Riverdale. Seventh-seeded Highland defeated No. 10 Hanford 6-3. No. 15 Arvin was eliminated by No. 2 Granite Hills, 8-1. Highland plays at Granite Hills today.
All matches are at 4 p.m. unless both teams agree to adjust the start time.
CSUB BASEBALL
The Roadrunners are on a three-game win streak, having taken the last two of a three-game Big West Conference series last weekend at UC Riverside and then, on Tuesday, defeating Pacific 17-4, in eight innings in Stockton. CSUB had previously defeated the Tigers 8-1, at Hardt Field on April 6. The teams will meet once more on May 12 at CSUB.
The 17 runs tied a season high previously reached in a 17-14 non-conference win March 30 at UNLV. On Tuesday, CSUB led 4-0 and grew the lead to 8-1 before Pacific scored three in the sixth. CSUB’s offense proceeded to score five runs in the seventh and Yahir Acevedo hit a grand slam in the eighth inning.
Other big hitters included Dusty Vela and Devon Wilkes. Both had three doubles to score runs. Vela drove in five and Devon Wilkes had two RBIs.
Pitching-wise, CSUB used seven pitchers and Pacific used six. Brock Adamson pitched the fifth inning to get the decision.
The Roadrunners (20-25, 9-12 Big West) host UC Santa Barbara (27-15, 13-8) for three Big West games this weekend, playing 6:30 p.m. games on Friday and Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday.
