The Chicago Cubs enter Monday with a 17-11 record, which is good for second place in the National League Central.
Frankly, that is a big surprise considering the sheer number of injuries Chicago has dealt with early on.
Last year's NL Rookie of the Year runner-up, Cade Horton , is out for the season after elbow surgery, and reliever Porter Hodge also is out the entire season with an injury.
Justin Steele is still working his way back from a 2025 injury, and Hunter Harvey , Caleb Thielbar , Daniel Palencia and Ethan Roberts are also on the 15-day IL.
On Monday, the Cubs added another: Relief pitcher Riley Martin. The Cubs placed Martin on the IL on Sunday, but the official injury diagnosis was worse than initially expected.
Martin has gotten off to a strong start, throwing 8.1 innings with a 2.16 ERA in eight appearances, so it's another unfortunate loss to the pitching depth for Chicago.
In some positive news, the Cubs activated pitcher Phil Maton from the IL.
Maton struggled this season before suffering a knee injury, and he went 0-1 with a whopping 13.50 ERA in just five appearances.
Still, Maton pitched well for the Texas Rangers and St. Louis Cardinals in 2025, and the Cubs need all the help they can get, especially with the flurry of injuries in the bullpen and rotation.
Cubs Manage to Win Games Despite Rash of Injuries

The Cubs, somehow, have not been affected too much by the flurry of injuries. Entering Monday's game against the San Diego Padres , they have lost two straight, although those came against the Los Angeles Dodgers .
Prior to that, the Cubs had won 10 in a row and 11 of 12, so they have been managing to win games.
Chicago even sent an offer to veteran pitcher Lucas Giolito , but he ended up signing with the Padres for a better offer from San Diego .
For now, the Cubs are surviving, but there is only so much this team can do if they continue to lost players for weeks at a time.
