The Chicago Cubs suffered a huge set-back when Cade Horton was declared out for the season with Tommy John surgery. Now, they’re 9-9 and last in the NL Central.

With that in mind, they need to replace Horton, and getting a real ace could kill two birds with one stone, as they don’t really have one at the moment. Luckily, Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter has a proposal that can do that: trading with the San Francisco Giants for Cy Young winner Robbie Ray .

The trade would look like this:

Cubs get: LHP Robbie Ray

Giants get: CHC No. 6 prospect 1B Jonathon Long

“With Cade Horton lost for the season, Matthew Boyd nursing a biceps strain and Justin Steele still working his way back from Tommy John surgery, the Cubs' rotation depth is being put to the test early…It's not hard to envision a veteran starting pitcher being atop their wish list at the deadline, and left-hander Robbie Ray could be the ideal target if the Giants can't turn things around. If the Cubs absorb what's left of his $25 million salary, it would lessen the prospect cost to acquire the former Cy Young winner,” Reuter wrote.

So far this season, Ray has been pretty good. He’s posted a 2-2 record, a 2.42 ERA, 24 Ks, and a WHIP of 1.030 over 22 innings pitched.

He’s in the final year of a five-year, $115 million contract , so he would be a rental. However, only having to give up one prospect for a Cy Young winner seems like a fair trade.

Hopefully, the Cubs realize this could be a season-saver, and get to work on trying to get Ray in pinstripes by August.
