The Chicago Cubs are going to receive a boost on Wednesday against the Philadelphia Phillies . According to Patrick Mooney of The Athletic, starting pitcher Matthew Boyd is set to return from the injured list and start Wednesday’s game.

Boyd has been dealing with a bicep injury . The Cubs have been hit hard by the injury bug this season , but Boyd’s return will help matters to say the least.

Boyd, 35, pitched in two games in 2026 before landing on the IL. He surrendered seven earned runs across 9.1 innings of work. It was not his best couple of outings, but Boyd is a veteran left-handed pitcher with a proven track record.

He was an All-Star during the 2025 campaign with the Cubs. Boyd ended up pitching to a strong 3.21 ERA in 31 total appearances. Even if he does not perform at that level again, Boyd should be able to make a significant impact as long as injuries do not prove to be an obstacle moving forward.

The first game of the Phillies and Cubs series was played on Monday night. Chicago earned an impressive 5-1 victory at home against Philadelphia. The Cubs have now earned six consecutive victories overall. The ball club is certainly beginning to find its rhythm.

Tuesday’s game will be the second contest of a four-game series against the Phillies. Shota Imanaga (1-1, 2.45 ERA) will start Tuesday night’s game against the Phillies before Matthew Boyd gets the start on Wednesday.

First pitch on Tuesday is scheduled for 7:40 PM EST as the Cubs look to win their seventh consecutive game.
