Chicago Cubs shortstop Dansby Swanson has been reinstated from the injured list, the team announced Friday. Swanson was expected to return for the Cubs' series against the Cincinnati Reds , but it is now official. Infielder BJ Murray Jr. was optioned to Triple-A in a corresponding move.
Swanson has not appeared in a game since early August due to an oblique injury. The fact that he is returning now is important, as not only will the Cubs have him available for the final stretch run of the season, but Swanson will get around a week of playing time before the postseason begins.
The 32-year-old shortstop has hit .216/.300/.404 across 119 games played and 458 plate appearances this season. Swanson also has recorded 18 home runs and 17 stolen bases. Perhaps he can reach a 20-20 season with a strong final week of the year.

The Cubs and Philadelphia Phillies both hold identical records at 85-68 overall, meaning the teams are currently tied for the top National League Wild Card spot. Chicago will play the Reds in Cincinnati this weekend with the first game scheduled for Friday night. The Cubs' final two series will be played against the Miami Marlins at home and then the Boston Red Sox on the road.
The series against the Reds and Marlins are favorable for the most part, but the Red Sox clash will be a challenge to end the season. Winning at Fenway Park is never an easy task.
Dansby Swanson 's presence should give the Cubs an important boost as they look to get the best possible postseason spot.
