As the Chicago Cubs are currently on a 10-game losing streak ahead of Wednesday's game against the Pittsburgh Pirates , the baseball world could be pondering if the team will be sellers or buyers at the trade deadline in August. While rumors will surround the Cubs ahead of the trade deadline, MLB insider Jon Heyman would reveal the intentions of the team heading into August.
With teams like the Boston Red Sox and New York Mets disappointing in 2026, despite big expectations, Heyman envisions them being sellers, whereas Chicago is "going to be a buyer." Heyman would even say that he believes the ball club is the "number one team" for Detroit Tigers star pitcher Tarik Skubal .
"They've been poor. They've been the worst offense in baseball over this 10 game losing streak, so that's worse than the Giants, that's worse than the Mets, that's bad, and particularly bad with runners in scoring positions, so they're going to need to do something, they're not going to be a seller, as the Mets I think are, as the Red Sox could be, the Cubs are going to be a buyer, that's why I named them my number one team for Skubal. They are missing their ace in [Cade] Horton, he is out for the year," Heyman said, via Bleacher Report Walk-Off.
The Cubs may need to accept their reality
With the Cubs looking to turn around their season from the 10-game skid, Heyman gives a reality check to the team, saying that he can't see a way to "improve the lineup on the field," despite the offense struggling. Though he sees the pitching being an issue that needs to be addressed, which Skubal would solve.
"They may just have to live with what they are, which is a great defensive team, average hitting team, who's in a slump right now…They'll go for Skubal or whomever to bolster that rotation…They're near the bottom in pitching, which they shouldn't be; they should not be that bad," Heyman said.
It remains to be seen what Chicago does, as they're expected to be buyers at August's trade deadline.
