Indiana bounced back from its heartbreaking loss to Ohio State with a gritty 13-6 overtime victory over Michigan on Saturday, and head coach Curt Cignetti made it clear Monday that his defense deserves most of the credit.
The Hoosiers struggled to generate much offensively in Ann Arbor, but their defense repeatedly answered the bell, keeping Michigan out of the end zone and ultimately securing the victory with a fourth-down stop in overtime.
"Great bounceback win last week up at the Big House," Cignetti said. "Tough, gritty, hard-fought game. Tremendous job by our defense. Came up time and time again with key plays at the right time. Just can't say enough about them."
Indiana's defensive success has become a consistent theme, particularly over the last several weeks. The Hoosiers have allowed just three touchdowns in their opponents' last 11 red-zone possessions, a remarkable stretch that has helped them remain competitive even when the offense isn't clicking.
Cignetti credited that success to discipline, execution and a talented defensive front that continues to make life miserable for opposing offenses.
"Timely plays and getting 11 guys to do their job," Cignetti said. "We got good players. We are good up front. Our front seven, eight, we're hard to run against."
One of the biggest reasons for that success has been defensive end Tobi Osunsanmi, who has already recorded nine sacks through eight games after totaling just 8.5 over three seasons at Kansas State.
Cignetti praised Osunsanmi's development under defensive coordinator Bryant Haines and the defensive staff, highlighting his explosiveness, technique and leadership.
Linebacker Rolijah Hardy has also emerged as an important piece because of his intelligence and versatility, while defensive back Amari Ferrell has recorded three interceptions over the last two games.
But while Indiana's defense continues to thrive, Cignetti acknowledged that the offense needs to improve, particularly through the air.
"We didn't separate at receiver in this game, and, you know, we obviously didn't throw the ball very well or very often," Cignetti said. "And a lot of that was because of type of game it became."
He also admitted that Indiana's passing struggles weren't entirely surprising based on what he saw during the week leading up to Michigan.
"And quite frankly, in practice last week the pass game wasn't very good. I expect it to be better this week," he said.
That improvement will be important against a Minnesota team that enters the matchup at 5-2, having already defeated three opponents that were ranked at the time.
Cignetti expects quarterback Josh Hoover to be healthier this week, but the Hoosiers will need more than improved quarterback play to get their offense rolling.
For now, Indiana's defense has proven capable of carrying the team through difficult stretches. The challenge moving forward is getting the offense to consistently hold up its end of the bargain.
