The Denver Broncos know how close they were to breaking the NFL sack record in 2025.
The all-time record of 72 sacks was set by the 1984 Chicago Bears . In 2025, the Broncos had the goal within sight for much of the season before falling off the pace late in the year, but still finished with an NFL-high 68 sacks, good for the fifth-most sacks in NFL history. Denver did break their franchise record which was set in 2024, when they compiled 63 sacks.
Broncos defensive lineman D.J. Jones recently said the defense's own expectations for 2026 is to break the Bears ' record. Jones had the perfect analogy of the defensive mindset and accomplishing the goal. "You know how you eat a good meal, and you lay down after to take a good nap, and you wake up and go eat again," Jones said after Thursday's training camp practice . "We're about to go eat again."
You can see Jones' full comments below.
Zach Allen agreed with Jones on the defense's shared goal. "We've got a lot of good guys; that's going to create a lot of opportunities for people," Allen said in June . "We came close to the sack record last year, and we fully expect to break it this year."
Pro Football Hall of Famer Dan Hampton , who was a member of the record-setting Bears and had 11.5 of those 72 sacks in 1984, said that breaking the record will be no easy task. "Every golfer thinks they can shoot 59," Hampton told Chris Tomasson of the Denver Gazette . "It's certainly possible to break our record. Lots has to go right. We will see."
Hampton also said if Denver takes all 17 games to accomplish the record, there will be an asterisk next to the feat. Hampton's Bears set the sack record when the NFL schedule was 16 games.
Based off the 2025 data , the Broncos have a great chance at breaking the record of the '84 Bears . In 2025, 17 players recorded at least half a sack. Ten players recorded more than three sacks. More all-around and individual production will be needed in order to break the record.
Is this one of the NFL's hardest records? It's stood for this long. Time will tell if it stands or falls.
