A disappointing start for the Dallas Cowboys has led to speculation over the future of the franchise.
With a 3-5 record, the Dallas Cowboys should be out of serious playoff contention by now. But in a weak NFC East, anything is still possible.
Even just making the playoffs may not be enough for Brian Schottenheimer to keep his job. They will need to win games when they get there.
Former Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant is already looking ahead. He has picked out his choice to be the next head coach.
Posting on X, Bryant stated: "I'm just saying… if anything were to happen in Dallas…Jason Witten should be the next head coach of the Dallas Cowboys. I can see it..and I'd love that."
Jason Witten was Bryant's teammate on the Cowboys for eight seasons between 2010 and 2017. It certainly makes sense that he would love to see his former colleague play his role in rejuvenating the franchise.
What are Jason Witten's coaching credentials?
Since his retirement from the NFL after the 2020 season, Witten has moved into coaching. But he is still early in his career.
Witten became head coach at Liberty Christian School, where he led them to win back-to-back TAPPS state championships in 2023 and 2024, including the school's first-ever TAPPS Division I title.
He made a new step earlier this year when he was named tight ends coach for the Oklahoma Sooners.
Just this month, Witten has been named as the Sooners' offensive coordinator, after Ben Arbuckle was fired.
While Jerry Jones could certainly be swayed by a great story in bringing Witten home to Dallas, it certainly seems like a huge jump right now. Witten himself would rather continue to learn the ropes in college football.
If Brian Schottenheimer can somehow extend his run with the Cowboys by another three or four years, Witten may end up as his successor.
But if their current trajectory continues , the Cowboys may need a replacement for Schottenheimer in January 2027 – and that may rule Witten out.
