Hockey is slowly creeping closer, and the Boston Bruins will hit the ice again tonight.
The Bruins will host the Philadelphia Flyers for their second and final home preseason game this season. The Flyers are coming off a 5-2 loss last night, but will be looking to put that one in the past as the Bruins look to sweep their preseason homestand.
The Bruins also made their first round of cuts, trimming the number from 49 to 41.
Elsewhere around the league, a Boston guy is hanging up the skates after a long NHL (and short KHL) career. The Dallas Stars put pen to paper on an extension with Sam Steel , and there are some injuries in Washington and Pittsburgh . There are also plenty of preseason results, including a game between the two teams the Bruins face this week.
Happy Tuesday, catch up on Bruins and league news in today's Daily Bean :

NHL News & National Hockey Now
Pittsburgh Hockey Now : Local legend Kevin Hayes called it a career yesterday. The Dorchester native signed with Ak Bars Kazan in the KHL, but that stint lasted five games. Hayes released a statement, and Penguins ' coach Dan Muse had some nice words about the ex-Penguin on Monday morning.
Hayes played in 12 NHL seasons ( NY Rangers , Winnipeg , Philadelphia, St. Louis , Pittsburgh) and had 446 points (185-261–446) in 805 games.
After 861 games in NHL and 5 games in KHL, Kevin Hayes πΊπΈ announced his retirement.
"I have decided to end my hockey career. I can no longer play at the level I am capable of because my body does not allow me to perform at my best. And I cannot accept not being in top form." pic.twitter.com/ItcQb18FA0— KHL (@khl_eng) September 21, 2026
Sportsnet : The Dallas Stars signed Sam Steel to a 4x$3.7M extension yesterday. The 28-year-old finished with 33 points (12-21–33) last season and has 175 points (61-114–175) in 491 career games.
RMNB : The Bruins, Flyers, and Capitals scheduled each other this preseason. The Bruins were off last night, but the other two were not. The Capitals picked up a 5-2 win over the Flyers last night in Hershey, PA.
RMNB : The Capitals are practicing without Alex Ovechkin right now. Spencer Carbery said the 40-year-old is dealing with a lower-body injury. Montreal Hockey Now : The Canadiens and Senators met in Trois-Rivières, QC, for the 2026 edition of Kraft Hockeyville. The game needed more than 60 minutes, and Lane Hutson set up Cole Caufield for the winner. Marc Dumont has the highlights from the Canadiens' win.
New Jersey Hockey Now : The New Jersey Devils rolled out a lineup of NHL regulars against the New York Rangers yesterday. The Devils won 3-2, and, unsurprisingly considering the opponent, Jack Hughes scored the game-winner.
Pittsburgh Hockey Now : The Penguins lost forward Ben Kindel during the first period of their preseason game last night. He suffered a lower-body injury and did not return. After the game, Dan Muse said the 19-year-old is still being evaluated.
