The Los Angeles Chargers signed Dalvin Tomlinson in free agency for more than his contract value. The veteran defensive lineman wanted a role that would let him move across the front, create uncertainty, and keep offenses from targeting him in one predictable spot.

Tomlinson signed a one-year , $7.5 million deal in March after starting all 17 games for the Arizona Cardinals last season. Now, the 31-year-old sees Los Angeles as a better football match for what he wants to do up front.
The appeal centers on flexibility. Tomlinson does not want offenses to lock onto him in one spot for an entire game, and the Chargers' defensive structure gives him a chance to shift across the line.
ESPN's Kris Rhim posted Tomlinson's comments Monday on X, formerly Twitter, after the veteran explained during media availability why the defensive fit stood out.
"I didn't want to sit in one spot and get game planned the whole game."
That answer showed how the Chargers used their defensive vision as part of their free-agency pitch. Instead of asking Tomlinson only to absorb blocks inside, Los Angeles can move him into different alignments and make protection calls less predictable.

The approach also fits the direction of defensive line coach Mike Elston's group. The Chargers want a defensive front that can disguise pressure before the snap and create disruption after it.
For Tomlinson, that matters. He has built a career as a reliable interior presence, but a more flexible role could help him affect games in different ways.
The Chargers need stability as they reshape their defensive front. Tomlinson gives the unit size, experience, and scheme versatility.
Free agency decisions often start with contract value. Tomlinson's explanation made clear that football fit also drove his choice. If Los Angeles' plan works, he will be a movable piece in a defense seeking more disruption.
