There is too much bad news today, ranging from the worst possible news to ugly personal attacks and an injury setback. Sadly, there is going to be a legal and maybe criminal fallout at Arizona State because of St. Louis Blues prospect Matthew Mayich's terminal coma. Elsewhere in the Daily, Patrick Marleau's wife took aim at Evander Kane with an ugly broadside regarding his character, though he rebutted with some grace.
Onto the more fun stuff: Patrik Laine is choosing between several teams, Montreal won't give up on the Kirill Marchenko trade rumors, and we tackled the three biggest questions facing the Pittsburgh Penguins.

My apologies, Penguins fans. It looks like my mid-week getaway is not going to happen. Not only are we expanding Hockey Now, but tornadoes and hellacious storms have swept over the north-central mountains all week. In the past, I have indeed ridden my bike through the angry teeth of a tropical depression that was spitting hail, but it's not an experience I'm keen to repeat.
It was 2018 or so, and I missed my window to get home. It's hard to forget riding over the central PA mountains past Johnstown, looking at the horizon being swallowed by the coiled black stormfront and knowing there was no way around it. Even after time in the dryer, my jeans took several days to dry, and my boots became a soggy mess worse than an Olive Garden special. But without a trip, I suppose there won't be any breaking Penguins news?
I'll see what I can do…

Now, the details of the extreme workout run by a former Green Beret are emerging, and ASU has some explaining to do, despite their denials of wrongdoing. The Athletic reports that police are investigating. It's an absolute tragedy, and it looks like it could have been easily prevented with some basic common sense .

Ottawa Citizen: The Ottawa Senators are not very interested, but Bruce Garrioch reports there are several teams kicking the tires on the goal-scoring winger who remains on the free-agent market just days before training camp .
Also on Wednesday, Sportsnet reporter Christine Simpson announced that she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Fortunately, it was caught early, and her prognosis is good. We wish her the very best in quickly defeating it and in her recovery.
Sportsnet: All things considered, this is low-level bad news. The Calgary Flames admitted that Jonathan Huberdeau suffered a setback after his surgery, and he won't be ready for training camp .
NHLtraderumors.me: Our buddy Dave Littman today because he rolled through the Sick Podcast network shows for the persistent NHL trade rumor from Columbus. Tony Marinaro made the case that Kirill Marchenko will eventually wind up in Montreal because it makes too much sense. Jimmy Murphy seconded that with sources who have been chattering about the eventual possibility .

San Jose Hockey Now: Oh boy. On Sheng Peng's podcast a few days ago, former Sharks defenseman Curtis Gabriel ripped Evander Kane to shreds, then went public with his heads-up to Kane that he did so. But it didn't end there. Patrick Marleau's wife cannonballed into the middle of the situation with a decidedly negative story and criticism. Kane responded to both .
AP: We knew this was coming, but Amazon is going to absorb six teams' local broadcasts, including Columbus, which finally has a home .
All things considered, landing on Amazon isn't bad. It's accessible, and it costs $15 a month. Hopefully, they don't tag fans with an extra fee. At least it's not Sports Channel USA or the Outdoor Network.
