Oregon has a football problem that has little to do with what happens between the lines. Dan Lanning is now dealing with another off-field issue involving one of his players. A freshman WR is facing serious charges following an alleged police pursuit.
Kezi9sports' Brett Austin Taylor reported that Messiah Hampton, one of the Ducks' promising young receivers, was arrested Friday and booked into Lane County Jail. The 18-year-old faces two felony counts of attempting to elude police and a misdemeanor reckless driving charge, according to jail records. He was later released without bond, but the case adds another uncomfortable chapter to Oregon's growing list of vehicle-related incidents.
The arrest also explains Messiah Hampton's sudden absence from the team's plans. He was added to Oregon's availability report late Friday and ruled out for Saturday's matchup against Northwestern. It was the second consecutive week he had been unavailable.
Dan Lanning had previously been asked about Messiah Hampton and fellow freshman receiver Jalen Lott missing the Illinois game. The Ducks coach declined to clarify whether their absences were related to injuries or disciplinary matters.

With a growing number of Oregon players facing serious legal troubles off the field, the pressure is shifting directly onto Dan Lanning. Between the recent arrests and mounting driving violations, both sports analysts and Ducks fans are starting to openly wonder if his approach to player discipline is tight enough.
For the first time in his tenure, Lanning's culture and locker room leadership are under a heavy microscope as people question whether he has a firm handle on keeping his players in line.
According to Springfield Police, the charges against Messiah Hampton stem from an October 18 incident involving two vehicles that allegedly evaded officers during a high-speed pursuit. Police later found one of the vehicles abandoned. On Friday evening, Deputy Chief George Crolly confirmed Hampton was identified as the driver of one vehicle.
"Mr. Hampton has been identified as the driver of one of the vehicles," he said. "We are still working to identify the driver of the other vehicle."
Messiah Hampton arrived in Eugene with plenty of promise. At James Monroe High School in New York, he was named the state's Gatorade Player of the Year in 2025 after an impressive high school career. Now, instead of discussing his development as a receiver, Oregon is dealing with another arrest and another set of questions for Dan Lanning.
The legal process will determine Messiah Hampton's case, but the concern surrounding Oregon's recent off-field troubles isn't going away. The abandoned vehicle was discovered near the area where senior receiver Evan Stewart was subsequently arrested and charged with DUII. Police have not identified him as a suspect in the pursuit.
TE Jamari Johnson was also cited for speeding that morning, although authorities have not linked him to Messiah Hampton's case. But this arrest is the latest in a series of vehicle-related incidents involving Oregon players and staff.
In April 2026, assistant head coach Ra'Shaad Samples faced DUII and reckless driving charges following a hit-and-run crash in Eugene . His case drew additional attention after dashcam footage reportedly showed him leaving the scene.
Then came Evan Stewart's DUII arrest on October 18. Jamari Johnson's speeding citation added another incident involving a Ducks player during the same morning. The program also has the 2024 fatal hit-and-run case involving former freshman DB Daylen Austin in its recent history. Austin faced a felony charge following the death of a pedestrian in Eugene.
These are separate cases, with different circumstances and levels of severity. With every new police report, public frustration is rapidly growing. What started as an isolated coaching issue with Ra'Shaad Samples in April has grown into a full-blown pattern following Evan Stewart's DUI and now Messiah Hampton's felony pursuit charges.
Local beat writers and national commentators are no longer treating these as bad luck; they are calling it a systemic culture problem that Lanning must fix immediately.
