With more than 60 new faces on the roster and an entirely different energy surrounding the program, Florida State's defensive turnaround won't hinge on one single player or position group.
For the Seminoles, improvement will require contributions across every position group.

But if there is one returning defender positioned to make a significant leap, it is defensive tackle Daniel Lyons.
Lyons enters the 2026 season with confidence that borders on conviction, yet it is confidence rooted in production and experience rather than empty talk.
"I got a lot to prove still," Lyons said. "A lot to prove to me, people in the building, my coaches, my teammates, and people in my room."
That mindset is noteworthy considering what Lyons already accomplished a season ago. The veteran defensive lineman earned Florida State's Most Improved Defensive Player award after posting career highs with 26 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, two sacks and a forced fumble. Across four seasons, Lyons has appeared in 42 games with 13 starts, steadily developing into one of the Seminoles' most dependable interior defenders.

The next step isn't simply becoming a reliable starter. Lyons wants to establish himself among the ACC's best defensive tackles.
"That I'm that. That I'm really like that. I'm that," Lyons said. "Relentless, everything. I'm just that player, I'm just that guy."
The numbers suggest that belief isn't misplaced.
According to Pro Football Focus (PFF), Lyons finished 2025 with a 69.0 overall defensive grade, highlighted by an impressive 73.0 run-defense grade. More importantly, he ranked fourth in the ACC among returning FBS defensive tackles who played at least half of their team's defensive snaps.

That ranking places him behind only Pittsburgh's Francis Brewu, Nick James and Virginia Tech's Kemari Copeland.
Those grades reinforce what Florida State's coaching staff likely already knew. Lyons consistently won against the run while flashing disruptive ability as a pass rusher.
Just as valuable as his production is the leadership role he has embraced.
With a roster undergoing massive turnover, Lyons understands experienced voices need to make themselves heard. He prefers leading through effort, but he has no hesitation speaking up when standards aren't being met.
"Being a leader, I just lead by example," Lyons said. "I work hard. I try to push everybody. If I see somebody slacking, I'll say something to them. Even if they see me slacking, say something to me."

That accountability has become one of the defining characteristics of Florida State's rebuilt locker room.
One theme echoed throughout preseason camp has been the absence of individual agendas.
Lyons believes the Seminoles' willingness to accept criticism from teammates, regardless of age or status, has strengthened the culture.
"It helps us. There's no 'ME' guys," Lyons said. "If I say something to you, it's not that I'm trying to criticize you or down talk you, I'm trying to make you better because we've got to be one."
For a program looking to climb back into ACC contention, that mentality may prove just as important as sacks or tackles for loss.

Florida State doesn't necessarily need Daniel Lyons to become the next Corey Simon or Ron Simmons overnight.
It needs him to become the player he believes he already is the difference maker the team can lean on through thick and thin.
If his leadership continues to elevate the locker room and his production follows the trajectory established in 2025, the Seminoles will have one of the conference's most impactful defensive tackles anchoring the middle of their defense.
