The Roster Shakeup Begins
The Pittsburgh Steelers finally made a definitive move to upgrade their secondary. The team announced the release of veteran safety Darnell Savage on Sunday afternoon. This decision clears the path for the immediate signing of Rayshawn Jenkins . The organization didn't waste a second swapping one experienced defender for another. Beat writers had long warned that Savage's spot was never truly safe. Now the 32-year-old is out, and Jenkins is in. The move sends a loud message about the team's priorities heading into camp. Depth at the safety position was a known weakness, and the front office just addressed it head-on.

They're not messing around with the timeline. Depth at the safety position was a known weakness, and the front office just addressed it head-on.
How the Switch Unfolded
Pittsburgh's front office acted quickly to finalize the roster transaction. Behind the Steel Curtain reported that the team released Savage in the same announcement that confirmed Jenkins' arrival. Jenkins was already linked to the Steelers on Saturday before the official news broke. The team had clearly been weighing its options for weeks. Jenkins and veteran Jordan Whitehead were both cut by the team during the first week of training camp. That workout session signaled a serious interest in bolstering the depth chart at the position. Savage was a former first-round pick in 2019, but his recent career has been shaky. He recorded only one start in 2025 while spending stints with three different teams. His time in Pittsburgh was brief and unremarkable. Last year for the Cleveland Browns, he appeared in all 17 games while starting just three as a rotational safety and special teamer. Now Jenkins steps in with a real shot at making the final 53-man roster. The preseason is rapidly approaching, and the clock is ticking. The safety room is crowded, but the coaching staff has a clear hierarchy forming. The current list of names includes DeShon Elliott , Jaquan Brisker , and the newly signed Jenkins. Jalen Ramsey , listed as a cornerback/safety, also remains in the mix alongside Robert Spears-Jennings, Jack Henderson, and Sebastian Castro . The team is looking for reliability, and Jenkins offers a fresh start. Asante Samuel Jr. is also mentioned in the defensive mix, though his specific role remains part of the larger picture. The organization wants players who can step up immediately when the pads go on.
The Steelers needed to cut ties with a player who no longer fits the long-term plan. Savage's inconsistency last season made him expendable. He simply didn't provide the stability the team demands from its secondary. Jenkins brings a different energy and a proven track record of starting games. The math is simple: one veteran out, one veteran in. The front office is betting that Jenkins will be the upgrade they need. This isn't a gamble; it's a calculated correction. The team can't afford to carry dead weight on the roster. Every spot on the 53-man list must earn its keep. Savage's departure was inevitable once the coaching staff decided to bring in Jenkins. The move shows that the Steelers are serious about competing for a championship. They won't settle for mediocrity when better options exist. Jenkins has a chance to prove he belongs in the starting lineup. The competition will be fierce, but the opportunity is there for the taking. This is the kind of decisive action that defines a winning franchise.

The team will take a day off on Sunday before the real work begins. Pittsburgh won't take the practice field on Sunday as they rest ahead of the next session. The pads come on for the first time on Monday. That is the moment when the theoretical roster becomes a physical reality. The players will face the grind of full-contact drills. Jenkins must perform immediately to secure his spot. The coaching staff will watch every rep closely. Monday marks the official start of the intense phase of training camp. The results of these drills will dictate the final roster cuts. The clock is ticking, and the players know it. There's no time to waste.
