The Chicago Cubs are getting blown out by the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday, already down 16-0 in th bottom of the sixth inning. It's been an ugly performance all around, but newly acquired starting pitcher David Peterson had the worst performance of his career so far.
In 3.2 innings of work, the 30-year-old left-hander recorded three strikeouts while allowing nine hits, three walks, and 10 earned runs. That's the most earned runs Peterson has ever given up in a single game in his seven-year career, according to Talkin' Baseball.
" David Peterson allowed a career-high 10 runs in his second start as a Cub. 3.2 IP, 10 ER, 9 H, 3 K, 3 BB," posted Talkin' Baseball.
It's been a tough season for Peterson overall. He entered Friday's contest with a 5.86 ERA and 1.588 WHIP, both of which are career-worsts, with 65 strikeouts. A change of scenery is seemingly not helping, as his woes in New York have shifted to Chicago.
Peterson joined the Cubs on June 25 after the New York Mets traded him to the franchise in exchange for first base prospect Cole Mathis . The front office acquired Peterson to the roster in an attempt to add depth to the starting rotation with five players on the IL. The experiment does not appear to be going as planned.
His play this season is a bit surprising considering David Peterson was solid on the mound in 2024 and 2025. His play last year was good enough to earn him the first All-Star nod of his career. For whatever reason, things just are not clicking in 2026.
