Even though Marc Marquez is facing the biggest points gap of his career this early in the season, Davide Brivio doesn’t think there’s any reason to worry just yet.

Marquez’s hopes of catching up took another hit after he crashed out early in the Spanish Grand Prix, which could have been his best chance to gain ground on the leaders.

The incident also widened Bezzecchi’s lead over him to 44 points, making it a tough task even this early in the calendar.

There were questions about whether Marquez was still feeling the effects of his past injuries during that race. Others believe he can still close that gap if things start going his way.

Despite all that, Trackhouse team boss Davide Brivio still thinks Marquez will back himself to find a way back into the title race before it’s too late.

Davide Brivio says Marc Marquez is calm despite a 44-point gap to Marco Bezzecchi

Speaking on a live stream with Giovanni Zamagni, Trackhouse team principal Davide Brivio was asked how Marc Marquez will approach the rest of the season after his crash at the Spanish Grand Prix.

Brivio noted that while Marquez won’t be happy about the crash, he knows he can close the gap. Last year’s championship win means he has little to prove, allowing him to fight as hard as he wants without feeling disappointed by the outcome.

“I asked myself this because yesterday, after the sprint, I thought, since he came back to within 24 points of Bezzecchi, the experience he probably has, and in the condition he is in, he says, ’Well, okay, 24 points, there are 18 races left, let’s start working to recover them calmly and peacefully…

“Last season gave him great peace of mind. He’s at peace with himself. He has closed the circle. So I think he’s saying now, ‘I have 54 points. Now I’m going to try to push and recover, and see where I get.’ But I don’t think there’s any pressure, any tension. I think he’s pretty calm overall.

“Angry, disappointed? Maybe because he’s done. But you don’t see him losing his head. Because he doesn’t have the advantage from last year, he’ll try and say, ‘Okay, great, 54 points, now I’ll try and win it. Then you’ll see an incredible story in the end, if I can’t, never mind. I’m fine.’

“It’s not that he’s not motivated, but he isn’t motivated with anxiety to win at all costs. That would lead to disaster. Maybe he had that last year. But he doesn’t have it now. I think he’s enjoying the moment more, the possible comeback, the races.”

How Marc Marquez took news of Marco Bezzecchi’s lead at the Spanish Grand Prix

MotoGP reporter Mela Chercoles, speaking on a livestream for the Nicoabad YouTube channel, shared Marquez’s reaction after being told about the gap to Bezzecchi.

“There was a curious anecdote with Marc on Thursday. He was telling us that he was 37 points behind the leader, that it was good, he had started recovering, and I told him, ‘Hey, don’t give away points, you’re 36 behind, not 37.’

“He goes, ‘Wow, well then I can start Sunday as the leader!’ He’s got his head on the wall for doubles. He knows he is going for Jerez. It’s not his circuit anymore. He hasn’t won there since 2019…”

Marquez isn’t letting himself get too concerned by the gap between him and Bezzecchi.

We’ll have to wait and see if this approach leads to a title push later in the season. But for now at least, Marquez seems to be handling things sensibly.
