The Edward Waters University women's basketball team woke up on the morning of Feb. 10 as statistically the best defensive basketball team among the 290 NCAA Division II programs.

If you strip the game down to the basics ― the team with the most points wins ― it's irrefutable. The Tigers are giving up 50.3 points per game after an 89-49 Senior Night thumping of Albany State on Feb. 7 at the Adams-Jenkins Complex, a full half-point more than second-place Texas-Tyler.

The victory was EWU's 10th in a row and is 15th in the last 16 games. The Tigers improved their record to 19-4 overall and 17-3 in the SIAC East Division, leading Clark Atlanta by two games.

EWU has the best overall and conference record in the SIAC regardless of division, with four conference games left, all on the road and three in six days next week.

But all signs point to a team that will go deep in the SIAC Tournament Feb. 28-March 7 in Morrow, Ga.

Coach Eric Jackson Jr., stresses defense

Edward Waters is in the second season under coach Eric Jackson Jr., who has won at every step by emphasizing a defense-first mentality.

The Holly Springs, Miss., native is the winningest coach at his alma mater, Rust College, Mississippi's oldest HBCU, where he compiled a 147-42 record in eight seasons. Jackson also coached Concordia College in Selma, Ala., where they went 59-26 in three years.

At both stops, he won championships and earned coach of the year honors. And through two seasons at EWU, he's 35-13 and counting.

In between college jobs, Jackson coached at Westside High School for two seasons, going 12-10 and 20-5 and winning the school's first-ever district championship in the second year. Westside was 2-20 the year before Jackson took over.

"I've been a defensive-minded coach my whole career," he said in explaining a coaching philosophy that requires his players only one thing: play hard at the defensive end, then watch what opportunities unfold at the other end. "We hang our hat on trying to keep the other team under 50 points. If we can do that, our offense should score enough to win."

The Tigers have done that in 15 games this season and won all of them. They have held opponents under 40 points five times and have given up more than 60 points only four times.

Tigers roster needed revamping

Jackson inherited a senior-dominated team in 2024-25 that went 16-9, the first winning season since 2022.

But nine players graduated or exhausted their eligibility, and the situation was made even more tenuous when guard Mia Morel, the SIAC's Newcomer of the Year and the Tigers' leading scorer, transferred to Missouri Western. Nekaya Williams, No. 2 in scoring, left for Columbus State and four other players who had minimal roles also left the team.

That left Jackson with no returning players. The cupboard was bare.

But it was an opportunity for him to build a roster with players who shared his vision of basketball.

"I told them I was from the old school," he said. "Let's get everyone in the same direction."

From the First Coast, Jackson lured Orange Park High graduate Nia Brown , a 6-foot-1 power forward from the University of North Florida, who usually guards the opponents' top shooter; and Jackson graduate Xaniya Jackson , a 6-2 center who had played at Florida State College-St. Petersburg and is peaking late in the season, scoring 15.1 points per game in her last four.

There are four other players from Florida on the roster, led by junior guard Tan Brown of Eustis (10.7 points per game), graduate forward Zahra Daniels of Miami (averaging 11.1 points in her last three games), and senior guard Jourdan Avery of Orlando.

Jackson went to New York to land two gritty defenders, senior forward Shcira Fowles, the nation's 17th-leading rebounder at 10.3 per game and junior point guard Imani Harris, the team's scoring leader at 11.7 points per game.

Jackson reached back to his hometown roots in Mississippi to land graduate guard Amelya Hatch and from Grayson College in Texas, by way of Uganda, came junior forward Diane Letaru.

EWU needed an early adjustment period

The Tigers looked every bit like a bunch of new players thrown together early in the season. After battling Central Florida in a 66-55 exhibition game loss, Edward Waters dropped their first three games, giving up an average of 67 points.

"Everyone was trying to outscore people instead of getting them to score less than you do," Jackson said.

The attitude adjustment was quick and lethal for opponents.

The Tigers won three SIAC games in a row before splitting with two NCAA Division I teams at ESPN's Wide World of Sports at Disney World, beating Bethune-Cookman and losing to Hampton.

Since that loss, EWU is 15-1.

"This is the most fun I've had playing basketball since high school," said Fowles, whose previous college experience was at Lander in South Carolina. "I love my teammates. I love the coaching staff. It's really fun."

"There's a joy in everything we do with this team," said Nia Brown.

Tigers don't do anything fancy

What's been remarkable about Edward Waters and the brand of defense it plays is that there are no dominant shot-blockers on the team (EWU is 105th in the nation with 3.1 blocks per game) or guards who steal dribbles and intercept passes (the Tigers are tied for 83rd in the nation with 10.0 steals per game).

What they do is play straight-up man-to-man defense and protect every inch of the floor in half-court.

While the Tigers are 47th in the nation in forcing turnovers (20.67 per game) they are third in the nation in field-goal percentage defense, allowing only 33 percent from the floor. EWU has held 18 opponents below 40 percent from the floor and 11 below 30 percent.

And when a shot is missed, Fowles is usually there to clean up ― she's fifth in the nation with 8.0 defensive rebounds per game.

The overall team quickness ensures that there's a body on every opponent, whether it's beyond the 3-point arc (the Tigers are third in the nation in 3-point percentage defense, allowing 23.8 percent) or in the low block, where Fowles, Jackson, Letaru and Daniels rule.

Jackson presses only as a change-up and plays zone only when his team gets in foul trouble or he wants to collapse on a dominant inside player.

No one gets tired. Ten players average double-digits in minutes played, so the Tigers throw wave after wave of fresh bodies on the court to harass opposing shooters.

EWU also excels at help-side defense, a concept where a player must leave their man if they see a teammate on the other side get beat off the dribble. Rarely does an opponent venture close to the basket without being double-teamed.

"We're not going after steals or blocks," Jackson said. "I don't like players reaching and gambling. If you get on the road and you get officials who are going to call the game tight, it can change your whole game. What I do want is for them to play as disciplined as we can and play as fundamentally sound as we can."

Players have bought into it and emphasize the team nature of playing good defense.

"You don't score on my sister," Fowles said. "My sisters have my back, and I have theirs."

Jackson said his decision long ago to emphasize defense, which he said was inspired by Rodney Stennis, his coach at Rust College, comes from a simple concept: scorers can have off-nights. Defense never has to, because it's all about desire.

"Defense travels," Jackson said. "It's about want-to. Not everyone can be a good shooter. Anyone can be a good defensive player if they put in the work and the effort."

With defense as their ticket, the Tigers are ready to travel, first to Georgia for the SIAC Tournament in two weeks, then perhaps to the NCAA Tournament.
