An NFL legend is probably quite happy that quarterback Haynes King has made the Carolina Panthers ' initial 53-man roster . . . or at least content with him not being in college anymore.
Pro Football Hall of Fame cornerback and current head coach the University of Colorado Boulder Deion Sanders recently praised King ahead of his team's season opener against Georgia Tech. Sanders had the following to say about the former Yellow Jacket back on Monday:
Sanders and the Buffaloes fell to King's Yellow Jackets' in last year's season opener. The 27-20 Georgia Tech victory saw King run wild for an astonishing 156 yards and three touchdowns.
He'd end the campaign having passed for 2,951 yards and 14 touchdowns and having rushed for 953 yards and 15 more scores. King was named the 2025 ACC Offensive Player of the Year and finished tenth in Heisman Trophy voting.
King made one heck of an impression in his first game as a pro, when he came on in relief of Panthers backup quarterback Kenny Pickett in last month's Hall of Fame Game . The undrafted rookie scored three touchdowns in the prime-time showcase, including a game-winning 5-yard dive into the end zone as time expired.
Unfortunately, King sustained a hamstring injury on the walk-off score—which cut his preseason short. But that wasn't enough to get him cut from Carolina's roster as we head into the 2026 season.
Oh, and Sanders might not have been wrong about King's presence—or absence. He and the Buffaloes topped the Yellow Jackets, 14-13, this past Thursday night.
