Demarcus Robinson injury in 49ers' win likely a high ankle sprain, per Shanahan originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area
The 49ers are 2-0 for the second consecutive season after demolishing the Miami Dolphins . But the 49ers never can seem to escape the injury bug, losing wide receiver DeMarcus Robinson to an ankle injury in the first half. After the game Kyle Shanahan gave an update on his status, and it is not encouraging.
"Yeah, that looked most likely like a high ankle sprain," Shanahan told reporters . "So, unfortunate there."
Robinson went down after catching a 20-yard pass from Brock Purdy with around six minutes left in the second quarter. After Purdy threw the ball a little bit too far in front him, Robinson extended his body to make the catch. He tried to get back up to finish the play, but was unable to and came up limping.
Robinson went back to the locker room on a cart and later was ruled out of the game. He finished the game with three catches for 34 yards.
Robinson, a fourth-round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, is in his second season with the 49ers but was expected to play a big role in San Francisco 's offense this season, especially with Ricky Pearsall out for the season with a knee injury and De'Zhaun Stribling sidelined for 10 weeks after undergoing surgery to repair a deltoid sprain. But Robinson's injury could keep him out multiple weeks and force the 49ers to bring in some reinforcements ahead of Week 3.
Robinson spent the first six seasons of his career with the Kansas City Chiefs , winning a Super Bowl in 2019. After a one season stint with the Baltimore Ravens in 2022 and a two season stint with the Los Angeles Rams from 2023-2024, he signed a two-year contract with the 49ers ahead of last season and finished his first year in San Francisco with 22 catches for 276 yards and a touchdown in 14 games.
Losing Robinson will hurt the 49ers and it will be vitally important that they find the right guy to take his place while he recovers. But Robinson should be back this season, and when he does return, expect the 49ers to continue to utilize him in a high-volume role.
