For Archie Brown, playing for Fenerbahce against Liverpool in the Champions League on Wednesday will mark another step in the justification of his own "unorthodox" journey that began as a young boy in the Midlands.
Brown, 24, was born in Birmingham and started his youth career at West Brom before joining Derby, where he helped them to their only youth top-flight title.

He scored a hat-trick in a 5-2 win over an Arsenal U18s side that included Bukayo Saka 5-2 in the final between the North and South division winners.
Yet come 2021, the Englishman was frustrated by a lack of first-team opportunities and left to join Lausanne Sport in Switzerland at the age of 19.
"I've had quite an unorthodox journey to get here. I won't say that was always the plan," Brown tells BBC Sport.
"It was a mixture of two things. I'd seen so many talented players stay on the fringes of the first-team, playing with the U21s and then by 22, 23, they have no real first-team experience.

"And they have to go down into the lower leagues or non-league to try and build their career up from there. I didn't want to fall victim to that.
"Secondly, I felt it was important to get out of my environment, to learn a new language, experience a new culture, to help me grow up and mature as a person," Brown adds.
The left-back - who also plays in central defence and midfield - joined Belgian side Gent in 2023, before moving to Fenerbahce in a £7m deal in 2025.
The Turkish Super Lig side may be struggling for form - they are sixth and nine points adrift of leaders Galatasaray after 10 games - but Brown is adamant that Andoni Iraola's Liverpool will face an almighty challenge at the 48,000-capacity Sukru Saracoglu Stadium.

The Reds have happy memories in Istanbul, winning the 2005 Champions League at the Ataturk Stadium, but have lost their past five games against Turkish sides in the city.
"There are not really any comparisons in English football. There are no stadiums that can replicate the atmosphere," says Brown.
"Sometimes it can be difficult trying to communicate with your team-mates because it's so loud and that's especially when the other team have the ball.
"The only thing I can say to people in England is to come watch a game if you have a chance because it's really special. There are no boring nights in Kadikoy."

Seeing red against Galatasaray
The pressure of playing for one of Turkey's 'big three' in Istanbul is immense.

Last Monday, Brown lost his cool against Galatasaray and was sent off for his role in a post-match brawl. Galatasaray accused him of physically attacking captain Abdulkerim Bardakci and he was given a three-match ban. Bardacki was banned for two games.
"It was a unique one," says Brown, who credits his Christian faith for helping him through difficult moments in his career.
"I always try to show my passion on the pitch and those derbies are fiery so anything can happen and unfortunately it came out in that way. But that's not my character.
"Everyone who's seen a Fenerbahce against Galatasaray match knows how intense it is. It's not abnormal for Turkish football, but it's definitely a lesson I have to take.

"Ultimately I'm disappointed because I've got suspended and the most important thing I can do is is to be there for my team-mates. It was my first red card and hopefully my last."
'I try to put smiles on fans' faces'
Brown, who namechecks Ashley Cole as one of his inspirations, has represented England at youth level and continues to dream of playing for the senior side.
He is something of a utility player, equally as comfortable going forward as he is defending.
"In the Galatasaray game I played centre-back but in Champions League games, I might be higher up and pop up in different positions," he says.

"The good thing about how we play is it gives me a lot of freedom, and I've had a lot of trust from the coaching staff to give the game whatever I feel like it needs.
"I like to play free and to try put smiles on the fans' faces.
That freedom was evident with the manner in which he scored Fenerbahce's first Champions League goal in 18 years during their draw against Roma this season.
On the eve of this game, Dirk Kuyt, the former Liverpool player who is now interim Fenerbahce boss, said it would be an exciting opportunity for his side to show Europe what they're capable of.

For Brown there is a similar excitement about the prospect of taking on the likes of Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz and Bradley Barcola, come Wednesday evening.
"I love it," he says. "You play football to play nights like this against players like these, so I'm excited for the challenge."
