ESPN has released its way-too-early power rankings for every Major League Baseball team, ranking all 30 clubs from best to worst. The Detroit Tigers find themselves inside the top 10, landing at No. 7 in the rankings for the 2027 season.
Unfortunately, the Tigers did not crack the top five, which would have been an outstanding achievement. Those spots belong to the Milwaukee Brewers, Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees, Tampa Bay Rays and Boston Red Sox, in that order.
The top five feature plenty of familiar contenders. The Brewers just won their first World Series championship, defeating the two-time defending champion Dodgers before beating the Rays in the 2026 World Series. The Yankees remain a perennial powerhouse, although the loss of Aaron Judge proved costly for the team this season. Meanwhile, the Red Sox surged late in the year, showcasing the talent on their roster after taking time to find their rhythm.
The Atlanta Braves rank sixth after defeating the Phillies in the Wild Card round before losing to the Dodgers in the Division Series. That makes the Tigers the highest-ranked team outside the 2026 postseason in ESPN's early 2027 power rankings.
ESPN pointed to Detroit's promising young talent as a major reason for its ranking.
"They have key young players to build around in Kevin McGonigle (7.1 WAR as a rookie) and Max Clark (1.2 WAR in 51 games), plus several rookies ready to contribute in 2027, including Ryan, who came over in the Tarik Skubal trade."
ESPN hit the nail on the head, as the Tigers will lean heavily on their young core heading into 2027. Injuries plagued Detroit throughout the 2026 season, forcing several young players into significant roles and giving them valuable experience earlier than expected.
McGonigle proved he could compete at an elite level during his rookie season at just 21 years old, while Clark made an impact after joining the Tigers' major league roster for the final two months of the season.
Beyond McGonigle and Clark , young hitters such as Eduardo Valencia and Hao-Yu Lee could be ready to contribute, joining established bats like Riley Greene, Dillon Dingler and Kerry Carpenter.
Pitching remains the biggest question mark heading into 2027. Although players such as Troy Melton and Jackson Jobe are looking to take the next step, the bullpen could ultimately determine how far Detroit goes. The Tigers need to find a way to return to the form their bullpen showed in 2024 after struggling with blown saves throughout the 2026 campaign.
Detroit also earned the distinction of being the highest-ranked American League Central team in ESPN's rankings despite finishing fourth in the division in 2026, ahead of both Cleveland and the Chicago White Sox.
The rest of the top 10 features Cleveland at No. 8, the Pittsburgh Pirates at No. 9 and the Philadelphia Phillies at No. 10. Pittsburgh joins Detroit as the only other team in the top 10 that missed the 2026 postseason.
The remaining AL Central teams are much further down the list, with the White Sox at No. 14, the Minnesota Twins at No. 19 and the Kansas City Royals at No. 25.
Detroit's exciting youth movement is already generating optimism about the future. With McGonigle, Clark and other young players providing a foundation, the Tigers have plenty of reasons to believe they can climb the rankings and return to the postseason in 2027. However, addressing the pitching concerns will be critical if they hope to turn that potential into results.
