The Detroit Tigers have acquired Tsung-Che Cheng , a left-handed hitting infielder, from the Boston Red Sox for cash considerations, the team announced on Friday, Oct. 30.
Cheng, 25, played 14 games for the Red Sox in 2026, hitting .256 with a double and knocking in five runs. He struck out 14 times with just four walks. He started at short in 13 of those games.
Cheng has been used primarily in the middle infield, but he gives the Tigers versatility and flexibility. At all levels, he has played 485 games at short, 155 at second and 40 at third.

The Tigers' 40-man roster now has 36 players. This move gives the Tigers several players who can play short: Cheng, Kevin McGonigle, Javier Báez, John Peck and Zach McKinstry. But the Tigers want McGonigle to settle into a position instead of bouncing from short to third.
