The New Jersey Devils have signed captain Nico Hischier to a five-year contract extension, according to reports. The former first-overall pick is heading into the last year of a deal that pays him $7.25 million per year. He has earned a $4.5 million pay raise to stay in New Jersey for the foreseeable future, per TSN's Pierre LeBrun.
"Devils captain Nico Hischier is expected to sign a 5-year extension with a $11.7 M AAV per season once new League Year starts at noon ET, that's when contract can be registered. He's got one more year left on his deal at $7.25 M next season before extension kicks in for 2027-28," LeBrun reported.
Hischier was taken first overall in the 2017 NHL Draft and has been with the Devils ever since. He has reached at least 25 goals and 65 points in each of the last four seasons, all while earning Selke Trophy votes as a top defensive forward.
Hischier joins Jack Hughes , Timo Meier , and Jesper Bratt as forwards signed long-term with the Devils. That core has not made the playoffs in the last two seasons, but only Meier is turning 30 next season. With a new general manager, Sunny Mehta, at the helm, the expectation is to make the postseason next year.
The Devils made two big trades in the lead-up to NHL Free Agency, selling off some pieces. They picked up two first-round picks from the Calgary Flames for Simon Nemec and some players from the Florida Panthers for goalie Jacob Markstrom . Now that they have answered the Hischier question, they turn to the net to find their next goalie.
Hischier's new deal does not take away from the $9.7 million in cap space the Devils have to spend this summer. Could Connor Hellebuyck or Sergei Bobrovsky be coming to Newark in a big-time goalie deal? Stick with ClutchPoints for the latest on all of the NHL Free Agency news.
