New Jersey Devils forward Timo Meier has been suspended for one game by the IIHF Disciplinary Panel on Friday following a kneeing incident during Switzerland's quarterfinal win over Sweden at the 2026 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship.
The incident occurred at 14:13 of the second period in Thursday's game when Meier attempted to throw a body check on Sweden forward Oskar Sundqvist in the neutral zone. Sundqvist moved to his right to avoid contact, but Meier adjusted his position and extended his knee, resulting in knee-on-knee contact, according to the IIHF ruling. The panel stated the play violated IIHF Official Playing Rule 50 for kneeing.
While the disciplinary committee said there was no intent to injure, it concluded that Meier's actions created dangerous contact and endangered the opposing player's safety. Meier originally received only a two-minute penalty during Switzerland's 3-1 win, but Sweden strongly objected to the hit after the game. The suspension will force Meier to miss Saturday's semifinal matchup against Norway.
The absence is huge for Switzerland, as Meier has been one of the tournament's top offensive contributors. The 29-year-old winger has recorded three goals and eight assists for 11 points in eight games, tying him for fourth in overall tournament scoring and ranking him fourth among Swiss scorers.
Meier is coming off his NHL season with the New Jersey Devils , where he produced 24 goals and 20 assists for 44 points in 77 games. Internationally, this is his fifth appearance for Switzerland at the World Championship. He previously earned silver medals in 2018 and 2025 and also represented Switzerland at the 2026 Milano Cortina Olympics, where the team finished fifth.
Switzerland entered the semifinals undefeated at 7-0 and are pursuing the first gold medal in program history after consecutive silver-medal finishes in 2024 and 2025.
