- Devin Lloyd’s Big Contract Is Already Paying Off For Panthers

Devin Lloyd is the best thing to happen to the Carolina Panthers defense this year. The team signed him to a three-year, $45 million deal in the offseason, and he has already shown why that money was worth every penny. While other fans worry about the roster, Lloyd is out there making big plays that keep the team in the NFC South race.
According to Heavy.com , Lloyd is ranked among the top free agent signings of the offseason across the whole league. This isn't just hype from a random blog. In a CBS Sports piece, Garrett Podell noted that the Panthers lead the division after the initial five weeks of the 2026 campaign. He noted that the team's success is partially because of Lloyd's playmaking ability. That is a huge statement for a player who joined the team just a few months ago.

Stats That Prove His Worth
The numbers backing up this praise are hard to ignore. Lloyd has recorded 31 total tackles (21 solo, 10 assists) and 2 interceptions so far in 2026. His biggest moment came in Week 2 against the Atlanta Falcons. During that match, he recorded nine tackles, one sack, two interceptions, a pick-six, and three passes defensed. This showing established him as the inaugural player following Zach Brown in 2012 to accomplish this exact combination within one game. An ESPN article by Jeremy Fowler stated that Lloyd stood alone as the sole NFL athlete recording five tackles for loss and five interceptions last season. He was ranked number 10 on ESPN's top 10 linebackers list by coaches and scouts.
Carrying the Load Alone
Lloyd is doing the work of two players right now. The Panthers secondary has struggled badly this year. Week 4 saw the unit earn an F grade for how they performed versus the Detroit Lions. A Sports Illustrated article by Preston Palm indicated that the potential loss of both Jaycee Horn and Mike Jackson appears to be a major issue. With those cornerbacks out, the defense needs Lloyd to be perfect. He is the only reason the team hasn't fallen apart in the middle of the field. His 99-yard pick-six against Patrick Mahomes in 2025 showed he can change a game with one play.

The Next Challenge Awaits
Now the Panthers face a tough test on the road. They play the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, Oct. 18, at 1 p.m. ET at Lincoln Financial Field. The Eagles have a strong offense that will try to test the middle of the field. If Lloyd can keep up his current pace, the Panthers have a real shot at winning. The team is 2-2 and sitting first in the division, but the margin for error is gone. Lloyd's $45 million contract looks like a bargain if he can force a turnover in Philadelphia.
