Heading into the 2025 season, Washington's wide receiver corps was headlined by future second-round pick Denzel Boston. Outside of the third-team All-Big Ten honoree, it was unclear who would step up in the supporting cast role. At the time, wide receivers coach Kevin Cummings was eyeing contributions from three freshmen: two four-stars, Raiden Vines-Bright and Chris Lawson, and three-star Dezmen Roebuck.
With two blue-chip recruits, an NFL draft pick, and a couple of veterans expected to soak up a majority of the playing time, many thought it would be tough for the Arizona native to find the field. However, after an eye-opening fall camp and injuries plaguing the position, the small high school prospect got his chance and ran with it.
Fast forward to today, and the second-year pass catcher has the most returning production of the Huskies ' receiver group after hauling in 42 catches for 560 yards and 7 touchdowns in his freshman campaign.
Heading into year two, the dynamic pass catcher is stepping into a much larger role in the offense alongside the veteran duo in fourth-year Rashid Williams and Kennesaw State transfer Christian Moss. Despite the age gap, the sophomore is the more experienced wideout in Jedd Fisch's offense.
"I mess with the receivers all the time; just watch Dez," Cummings said on Tuesday. "Just watch him, watch the way he works, the way he plays, the way he practices. He's a guy that's going to finish down the field after every catch; he's a guy that's going to stay in bounds after every catch even if it puts him on the sideline; he's the guy that you can coach up and have a new adjustment to a play or new wrinkle here, and he gets it first try. If we can have more guys that can take the game as serious as Dez does, then you'll have an elite receiver group."
As just a second-year player, Roebuck has assumed a leadership role both on and off the field. Outside of Williams and Moss, most of the depth is made up of young and inexperienced receivers. Listed along the Huskies' two-deep chart are sophomore Chris Lawson, junior Justice Williams, and the true freshman trio of Trez Davis, Jordan Clay, and Mason James.
Supported by one of the best offensive lines in the Big Ten and a promising group of receivers looking to prove themselves, Roebuck and his childhood teammate Demond Williams Jr. will have the chance to put Washington back in the conversation as Big Ten contenders.
