Despite Milwaukee Brewers starter Brandon Woodruff being pulled after just 1.1 innings, they still blew out the Arizona Diamondbacks 13-1 on Thursday. But in the process, Diamondbacks infielder Ildemaro Vargas made Venezuelan history.
Vargas went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles in the loss. He extended his hitting streak to 26, which ties the record for longest by a Venezuelan-born player, originally set by Wilson Ramos in 2019, via independent journalist Francys Romero.
Through his first 23 games in 2026, Vargas is hitting an unreal .378 with six home runs and 20 RBIs. The infielder’s batting average speaks for itself. One more game with a hit would etch his name in Venezuelan lore forever. But even if it were to stop, a batting average over .300, let alone .350 will always raise eyebrows.
Vargas has already tied his career-high in home runs and is just 11 RBIs from his career-high. The 2026 season marks his 10th year in the majors. His hot start means this campaign will already be one of his best over the past decade.
As for the Diamondbacks, their latest win moved them to 16-14 on the season. While they’re still 3.5 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West, Arizona’s main goal is competing in 2026. If Vargas continues hitting the way he does, reaching the postseason becomes more likely.
A career .257 hitter, the infielder still has to prove he can be consistent over an entire season. But the Diamondbacks certainly aren’t complaining about the blazing start. Assuming he’s in the lineup, Vargas’ next opportunity to extend his hitting streak, and fully capture the Venezuelan record, will be on Friday against the Chicago Cubs .
