Just a week after being designated for assignment, a veteran pitcher is back with the Arizona Diamondbacks .
Right-hander Joe Ross signed a minor league contract with the NL West club on Wednesday. The veteran was assigned to Triple-A Reno.
Ross, 32, is a nine-year veteran who's spent time with the Washington Nationals (2015-19, 2021), Milwaukee Brewers (2024), and Philadelphia Phillies (2025). He made Arizona's Major League team out of spring training but allowed eight earned runs on seven hits in just 3.2 innings.
"It's common for veterans in his position to decline an outright assignment but re-sign on a new minor league deal," Anthony Franco of MLB Trade Rumors wrote. "Those can come with a higher minor league salary or opt-out/upward mobility opportunities that might not have been present had they accepted the outright."

After electing free agency, Ross returns to the D-Backs in search of better results. He made 37 outings with the Phillies last season, including one start. Eighty-seven of the veteran's 163 career appearances have come as a starter.
Joe's brother, Tyson, is a retired Major League pitcher who played for five organizations during a 10-year career from 2010-19.
