Did Jason Robertson hint at Stars departure with 'dark sides' comment? appeared first on ClutchPoints . Add ClutchPoints as a Preferred Source by clicking here .
One of the biggest storylines of the 2026 NHL offseason will be whether Jason Robertson will sign a long-term contract extension with the Dallas Stars or whether they'll see out a trade for their star winger. The problem for the Stars is that they lack salary cap space to fit him into their lineup, a problem they knew could arise after signing Mikko Rantanen last season .
Jim Nill attempted to go all out for a two-year window with Rantanen, but Dallas lost to the Edmonton Oilers in last year's Western Conference Final and was eliminated in the first round by the Minnesota Wild this year. It now leaves Robertson questioning his future , according to Abby Jones via X, formerly Twitter.
"When anyone thinks of top teams in the NHL, they think of Dallas. So it's been great," Robertson told reporters. "It's been great being a part of that for so long, and you get so used to it, so you don't really understand the dark sides of hockey not being at that peak. So, yeah, it's big."
It's usually not a good sign when a player starts talking about their current team in the past-tense. Robertson saying "it's been great" twice sounds like someone who might be halfway out the door, knowing the contract they deserve and knowing that their current team can't afford to pay it.
If Jason Robertson does leave Dallas, the Detroit Red Wings, Boston Bruins , and Toronto Maple Leafs are all teams to monitor as they search for some scoring help.
