- “He Didn’t Protect The Team”: Kyle Whittingham Breaks Silence On Zack Marshall’s Leaked Group Chat Controversy

Michigan football has dealt with plenty of adversity over the past few weeks, and the situation took another turn when a private group chat involving tight end Zack Marshall was leaked on October 5. With the Wolverines coming off consecutive losses, head coach Kyle Whittingham has now addressed the controversy and made it clear that Marshall made a serious error in judgment.
Marshall reportedly criticized offensive coordinator Jason Beck and Michigan's offense in the messages. The screenshots eventually circulated publicly, forcing the tight end to issue an apology.
Speaking about the incident on 7 News Detroit , Whittingham defended Marshall while making it clear that he was disappointed by the decision.
"Zack was very apologetic. It was an unfortunate deal. Zack Marshall's a great young man. He's a team guy. It was just a lapse in judgment or an error in judgment. The bottom line is he didn't protect the team like we need to do. And so that was unfortunate, but we're moving on," he said.
Marshall reportedly apologized to both Whittingham and the rest of the team and also issued a public statement addressing the situation.
However, Whittingham also emphasized that the biggest issue was not necessarily Marshall's frustration itself. Instead, it was the fact that he allowed those frustrations to leave the team environment.
"Yeah, people get frustrated. Yeah, you get frustrated," Whittingham said. "You lose a couple games. People get frustrated. And it was in a small – it doesn't matter if it was in a small group chat. It was in a small, close circle. That's beside the point. The point is you've got to protect the team. And it wasn't protecting the team. It was not protecting the team," he said in a press conference.
The Wolverines have lost two consecutive games to Minnesota and Iowa and remain winless in Big Ten play.
The leaked messages reportedly centered on frustration with the offense under Beck, which has struggled to consistently produce during Michigan's recent losses.
Marshall's comments arrived at a sensitive time for the program. Rather than allowing the controversy to dominate the locker room, Whittingham appears determined to put the situation behind the team. The coach has already said that Marshall is a valuable member of the program, suggesting the incident will not define the tight end's standing with Michigan.
Michigan now has no time to dwell on the controversy. The Wolverines are preparing to host Penn State at The Big House, with kickoff scheduled for Saturday afternoon.
After consecutive losses, Michigan desperately needs to make a comeback. Whittingham now hopes the group chat controversy becomes a lesson rather than another distraction as the Wolverines attempt to get their season back on track.
