The Milwaukee Bucks fans finally had a reason to rejoice, thanks to their trade deadline pickup, Cam Thomas . Facing the Orlando Magic , the 24-year-old led his new team to an impressive win on the road. Coming off the bench, he scored a game-high 34 points on 60 percent efficiency.
Something to cheer about for the Bucks fans who have been dealing with a lot of turmoil lately, whether it is the team's poor performances or Giannis Antetokounmpo's uncertain future. Cam's recent showing at the Kia Center provided some respite for Coach Doc Rivers as well.
One could say that the Giannis situation has taken a bit of a toll on Doc, too. Nonetheless, the Top 15 coach in NBA history had something to smile about recently, courtesy of Milwaukee's latest addition to the roster. It also took Rivers back to his days with the Los Angeles Clippers .
Addressing Thomas' second game in a Bucks uniform, Rivers had the highest praise for him.
"Unbelievable, I've had Jamal Crawford. I've had Lou Williams. Now, I have Cam Thomas . Very similar, they're all different in their own ways. Cam wants to do right, you can see that, and we're gonna give him every opportunity. I mean, the guy is a natural scorer, and you can see that," the Bucks coach told reporters, with his comparison making for an interesting subject of debate.
Likening Thomas to the former Clippers duo
Thomas was recently waived by the Brooklyn Nets , owing to failed contract negotiations and differences with Coach Jordi Fernandez. Fortunately, he was able to find a new destination in Bucks soon enough. After a quiet debut, Cam surprised everyone with a scoring burst in his second game.
So much so that Rivers compared him to veterans like Crawford and Williams. Currently in his fifth year in the league, Thomas is known for his microwave-like scoring ability. His shotmaking abilities are certainly noteworthy, coupled with his close to 86 percent efficiency at the line.
Even though Cam may mimic Jamal and Lou in scoring and playing off the bench, he still has a long way to go. On the other hand, the Sixth Man of the Year duo of Crawford and Williams were known for their impeccable ball-handling and their ability to impact winning.
Keeping all the comparisons aside, it's a new beginning for Cam, who now joins forces with the Greek Freak in Milwaukee. On a mission, the 6'3" guard is looking to break certain preconceived notions about him.
More than just a scorer
A common criticism of Cam for a long time has been his inability to contribute in other facets of the game beyond scoring. In a recent press interview, Thomas debunked any such theories that have long circulated against him.
"I am more than just a scorer. I feel like. Playmaking. Drawing the defense on me, making the right plays. I feel like that's a part of my game that gets underrated just because I score the ball so well. People don't really look at that," said Thomas.
It will be interesting to see how things pan out with Cam in the future and whether he gets to share the court with Giannis. The latest addition to the Bucks has the perfect window to prove his worth as a talent, and could play a role in the volatile situation between the Greek Freak and Bucks management, especially over the summer.
