The Los Angeles Dodgers entered the Fourth of July holding an astonishing National League West lead . But Chuckie Robinson won't be with the franchise for their holiday showdown against the San Diego Padres .
The alternate catcher became a part of this Saturday move announced by the franchise .
"The Dodgers have selected the contract of catcher Eliezer Alfonzo and optioned catcher Chuckie Robinson," the team announced on the social media website X, formerly Twitter.
Alfonso put together stellar results down in Oklahoma City for the Dodgers' Triple-A affiliate. Manager Dave Roberts and the front office have clearly taken notice, as this becomes Alfonzo's first official MLB call-up.
But there's another reason behind Alfonzo's elevation: A key MLB Injury in the room. Catcher Will Smith remains out and the Dodgers are left with Dalton Rushing as the only other option.
Alfonzo is hitting at .318 with the Comets through 49 total games. Los Angeles invited him out for spring training after signing him to a minor league contract back in November. He responded by smashing three doubles across 15 Cactus League games. He previously spent eight seasons with the Detroit Tigers organization through eight seasons while with their minor league system.
Robinson only went 2-of-23 at the plate while serving as the No. 2 catcher behind Rushing. Now he'll swap places with Alfonzo.
Los Angeles, meanwhile, enters the holiday with an MLB-best 58-31 overall record. No other teams in the NL West are currently above the .500 mark. Los Angeles is also four games ahead of the National League's second-best team the Milwaukee Brewers , who are 54-32 overall.
