Though the 2026 MLB season is just barely a month old, some are already looking forward to the trade deadline, where the Los Angeles Dodgers will absolutely be a player even if they maintain the best record in the NL.

Breaking down early trade candidates for all 30 teams a little over three months before the deadline, ESPN’s David Schoenfield has identified an ideal move for Los Angeles to consider before the first Monday in August, even if it has more to do with giving a young player more opportunities elsewhere than helping the Dodgers’ pursuit of a World Series three-peat.

“Free Ryan Ward! Look, if the Dodgers need to upgrade, they can always trade one of their outfield prospects, but barring a long list of catastrophic injuries, they don’t have to do anything. Maybe, out of the kindness of their hearts, they will trade Ward,” Schoenfield wrote. “The 28-year-old, who’s on their 40-man roster, deserves an opportunity to play. He made his debut for the Dodgers on Sunday with two hits and one RBI. He hit .290/.380/.557 with 36 home runs last year at Triple-A and was hitting even better in the minors this year. Surely some team can use him and give him a shot?”

When Freddie Freeman was away from the team on paternity leave , Ward was given the nod to play some MLB innings and looked solid in the role, recording two hits and an RBI in six total at-bats against the Colorado Rockies . And yet, with Dave Roberts having to scratch his head nightly for ways to get Dalton Rushing at-bats as he continues to be one of the most efficient hitters in baseball, the idea of moving on from Ward for longer-term prospects might not be the worst idea, as similar trades are why the Dodgers have one of the best farm systems in baseball.
