The Los Angeles Dodgers are off to a great start, and Shohei Ohtani has been heating up as April continues. With his most recent achievement, he just tied Ichiro Suzuki with a mind-blowing stat in MLB history that few have come close to, according to Sonja Chen of MLB.com
"After drawing a leadoff walk in the top of the first, Ohtani extended his on-base streak to 43 consecutive games dating back to last season, tying Ichiro Suzuki (2009) for the most by a Japanese-born player," Chen wrote.
The accomplishment also tied for the sixth-longest streak the Dodgers have seen in the Modern Era. Ohtani finally hit his first home run of the season, and has been on fire this week while hammering the Toronto Blue Jays , the team the Dodgers beat in the World Series. Additionally, Ohtani has been stout on the mound, continuing the trend he set last season. His play has been exceptional, especially when compared to the 2009 season Ichiro had.
Ichiro hit .352 with 11 home runs, 46 RBIs, and 88 runs with a .386 on-base percentage in that season. At the time, that was one of the best moments from a Japanese-born player. Ohtani has shattered records consistently throughout his career and is attempting to help the Dodgers win their third straight title. So far, it's been going well.
Ohtani is batting .267 with three home runs, eight RBIs, and seven runs with an on-base percentage of .407. After battering the Jays, the Japanese superstar has helped his Dodgers get off to a 9-3 start. The Dodgers have the day off before beginning a three-game series at Chavez Ravine with the Texas Rangers .
