The Los Angeles Dodgers received encouraging news Tuesday as shortstop Mookie Betts resumed pregame activity just days after landing on the injured list with a right oblique strain.
Betts was placed on the IL Sunday, but early signs point to a quicker-than-expected recovery. Oblique injuries often require extended time away, making his rapid return to light activity a positive development for Los Angeles .
The four-time World Series champion took the field at Rogers Centre two days after the team placed him on the injured list. He went through pregame defensive drills, moving laterally at shortstop without visible limitations, and in the clip, he also fielded ground balls at first base from a kneeling position.
The California Post's Jack Harris shared video of the session on X, formerly Twitter, showcasing the veteran's early return to on-field activity ahead of Game 2 vs. the Toronto Blue Jays , the second matchup of the clubs' ongoing three-game set, and a rematch of the 2025 World Series.
" Mookie Betts is going through some pregame drills today
He said yesterday he's hopeful it'll be a short IL stint"
Harris also relayed Betts' comments on his condition in an accompanying article linked to the post, offering additional optimism about his recovery timeline.
"Honestly, I don't even really notice that it hurts," Betts said. "Much better spot than originally anticipated."
While Betts has resumed light defensive work, he has not yet returned to full hitting activity. The Dodgers continue to take a measured approach as he progresses through recovery.
In the meantime, Los Angeles has adjusted its lineup, with Miguel Rojas and Hyeseong Kim handling shortstop duties. Despite his absence, the Dodgers opened the series with a 14–2 blowout win vs. the Blue Jays.
Betts' recovery will remain a central storyline going forward for the club. If his progress continues at this pace, his return could come well ahead of the typical timetable for oblique injuries.
