- Does Competition Make Players Better? Joey Ortiz's Stats Say Yes
Joey Ortiz has turned a challenging start to the 2026 season into an opportunity to become a more important piece of the Milwaukee Brewers' lineup. The infielder faced increased competition after the arrival of top prospect Cooper Pratt, but the change in roles helped spark a turnaround.
Ortiz moved from shortstop to third base when Pratt joined the major league roster. Instead of letting the adjustment disrupt his season, he embraced the new assignment and began producing at the plate.

Brewers manager Pat Murphy has praised Ortiz's response, recognizing the value of a player who remained committed despite losing his regular position at shortstop.
The shift has been reflected in Ortiz's offensive numbers. According to the supplied statistics, he hit .207 with a .561 OPS over his first 170 plate appearances before Pratt's debut. After the prospect arrived, Ortiz recorded a .310 average and an .840 OPS across 245 plate appearances, adding eight home runs and 33 RBIs.

That improvement has given Milwaukee another productive option as it prepares for the postseason. Ortiz's ability to contribute at third base also adds flexibility to an infield featuring several young players.
The Brewers will need contributions throughout their lineup as they begin their National League Division Series against the San Diego Padres. Ortiz's resurgence offers another encouraging development for a team that has relied on its depth throughout the season.

Pratt's arrival could have made Ortiz's path to regular playing time more complicated. Instead, the infielder's response has helped him earn a meaningful role in Milwaukee's postseason plans.

Murphy's recognition highlights that progress. After navigating a difficult stretch and adapting to a new position, Ortiz now has an opportunity to show that his improved production can carry over into October.
