Samsonov played last year in the KHL, posting a 3-8-0 record and a .903 Save % with HK Sochi.
Samsonov was the Washington Capitals' No. 22 pick in the 2015 Draft. In 200 NHL appearances with Washington, Toronto Maple Leafs , and Vegas Golden Knights , the 29-year-old went 118-48-25 with a .902 Save %. From 2021 to 2024, he was the 1A netminder for the Caps and Leafs.
The San Jose Sharks signing Samsonov was something of a surprise, considering their positional depth. While the Sharks don't have a clear-cut No. 1 yet, they appear set with Yaroslav Askarov and Alex Nedeljkovic with the big club, and Eric Comrie and Kyle Keyser with the San Jose Barracuda.
So where does Samsonov fit in?
"He can be a No. 3 NHL goalie," an NHL scout, who watched Samsonov last year, told San Jose Hockey Now.
That appears to be Comrie's role in the organization, and he's got the contract to prove it, a two-year, one-way contact with a $1.15 million AAV.
Samsonov could be a hedge if Comrie is claimed on waivers?
Or do one of the San Jose Sharks goalies have an undisclosed injury?
The Sharks open training camp on Sept. 17.
