The Winnipeg Jets have signed Stuart Skinner to a two-year contract, which could mean the end of Connor Hellebuyck's tenure with the club . Skinner signed a two-year deal worth $3.75 million per year, per multiple reports . Hellebuyck has not formally requested a trade, but his name has been circulating after a dreadful season in Winnipeg.

Skinner was the Edmonton Oilers' starting goalie on two trips to the Stanley Cup Final. But his failures cost them a chance against the Florida Panthers twice, so they traded him during the 2025-26 season. He played 27 games with the Pittsburgh Penguins, posting a 2.99 goals-against average while there.
The Jets won the Presidents' Trophy in 2024-25, mainly thanks to a Hart Trophy season from Hellebuyck. But the team took a big step back in 2025-26, all while the Michigan native led Team USA to a gold medal. Multiple members from the USA team have requested trades this offseason, and Hellebuyck may be out the door.
The Jets did need a goalie to back Hellebuyck up this offseason, with Eric Comrie's contract expiring. But his $3.75 million cap hit is larger than that of a traditional backup goaltender. With veteran backups like David Rittich and Petr Mrazek still available, they could have gone for a cheaper option if it were a true backup move.

It was reported on Wednesday that the New Jersey Devils were not going to trade for Hellebuyck . It was also reported that the goalie waived his no-movement clause to go to the Buffalo Sabres, but the two sides could not get the deal done. Where is the gold medalist going to play next season? It could still be with the Jets, but this move makes that less likely.
