It doesn't seem like former UConn head football coach Jim Mora is having a great time in his first year at Colorado State.
The former Huskies coach left Connecticut for greener pastures in the Rocky Mountains last offseason, but it's been a rocky start in Fort Collins– to say the least.
The Rams are off to a 3-5 start and have the worst defense in the nation (138 out of 138 FBS teams in total defense), allowing 526.4 yards per game and over eight yards per play. They're also giving up an eye-popping average of 42.38 points per game, which would be the worst in program history.
In their last six games, Colorado State has allowed 41, 59, 56, 66, 49 and 31 points.
They lost, 31-14 at Utah State on Saturday, the team's fifth defeat in six games, and Mora let his frustration out in a postgame press conference.
"I'll tell you right now, the hammer is coming down," Mora said.
Asked what the issue was with his team, he reeled off a litany of issues.
"It's immaturity, it's guys that are used to losing, it's the whole transfer portal where they can start looking for an off-ramp. But those are all excuses," he said.
As for what was going to change next week?
"I'm going to be an (expletive). If they don't like it, there's a door and they can walk their (expletive) right out," Mora said.
"I know how to turn programs around, I've done it four times," he continued. "And you do it by being tough. You've got to be freaking tough. You've got to be willing to make really hard decisions, as a university, as a program."
Mora has already made some hard decisions this season– such as a bizarre situation in which defensive coordinator Tyson Summers left the team mid-game during their 56-26 loss to Oregon State on Oct.3. Mora relieved Summers of his play-calling duties after Oregon State took a 14-0 lead, and Summers took offense, walking off the field.
"He made the decision on his own to leave the field," Mora said after the game, "and he is no longer with the program."
Things won't get much easier for Colorado State this week, as they face No. 20 Boise State on Saturday.
