The Miami Dolphins weren't given a very good chance to come out on top in Week 8 against the New England Patriots. Despite being an underdog, the team put up a fight.
When all was said and done, the Dolphins came up short by a final score of 24-19.
Even though the end result was a loss to their AFC East rivals, Miami has a lot to be happy about coming out of the game. Being able to hang with a team who many believe to be a contender in the AFC was a positive sign.
At the end of the day, a loss is still a loss. The Dolphins now hold a 1-6 record and are likely headed for another high draft pick.
Following the loss, defensive end Chop Robinson spoke out and revealed a major failure the defense had in the loss to the Patriots. He wasn't happy with the team's run defense.
"Once they started putting up points, they didn't really have to throw the ball anymore," Robinson said . "So we just kind of run left, run right, and we had to stop the run; we weren't doing that. So we just leaked the yardage."
Robinson ended up putting together a strong performance against New England. He recorded three tackles and two sacks. Miami ended up sacking Patriots star quarterback three times on the afternoon.
On the ground, the Dolphins allowed New England to run for 131 yards and a touchdown on 36 attempts. They gave up an average of 3.6 yards per carry.
In most scenarios, those numbers wouldn't look horrible. Unfortunately, Miami was unable to get stops in the running game when it needed them the most.
Next up for the Dolphins will be a Week 9 matchup against the Detroit Lions. Trying to contain Jahmyr Gibbs on the ground will be much more difficult that Miami faced against the Patriots.
Gibbs has produced at a high level all season long. He will enter this week's game against the Dolphins with 773 yards and eight touchdowns on 157 carries, which averages out to 4.9 yards per carry.
All of that being said, Robinson and the Miami defense will have their work cut out for them this week. The Dolphins weren't happy with their inability to stop the run in key situations last week. Perhaps they can figure out a way to slow down Gibbs on Sunday afternoon.
