The Miami Dolphins have just two running backs on their roster after De'Von Achane suffered a season-ending injury.
That's why they added another one from the practice squad ahead of Sunday's matchup against the Minnesota Vikings.
On Saturday, the Dolphins signed Carlos Washington Jr. from their practice squad to their 53-man roster, according to Aaron Wilson of KPRC of Houston . Miami originally signed Washington in May during its offseason program. He was released during final roster cuts following training camp before re-signing with the Dolphins' practice squad.
Washington has played in just two career NFL games
Washington, 27, played college football at New Hampshire from 2017-21 and Southeastern Louisiana in 2022. Between the two schools, he rushed for 2,475 yards and 25 touchdowns. He spent the first three seasons of his NFL career with the Atlanta Falcons organization after going undrafted in the 2023 NFL Draft.
Washington played in just one game in each of Atlanta's last two seasons and recorded 21 special teams snaps. The Falcons released him in May, weeks before he signed with the Dolphins.
Miami needed to add another running back after Achane tore his ACL in last Sunday's loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. In addition to Washington, the Dolphins have Jaylen Wright and Ollie Gordon II, who will likely split carries in Achane's absence. But don't be surprised if quarterback Malik Willis is also more involved in Miami's rushing attack.
The Dolphins also have Jarquez Hunter, who they could have elevated from the practice squad instead of Washington.
"Certainly different qualities in each, but I think they're both good backs who can carry the ball," Dolphins coach Jeff Hafley said of Washington and Hunter. "They've got good straight-line speed. They run hard. They can be in there on third down in protection, so they don't have to come off the field there. They both have some size to them, and they can both catch the ball out of the backfield. So I think they're similar. Now, to see them in games, I know Carlos has played and Hunter has played in a bunch of preseasons, so we'll see who we go with."
For now, Washington gives the Dolphins another option in the backfield as they try to replace the production of their biggest offensive weapon.
