The Miami Dolphins defense may be the unit that can help carry the team into being far more competitive than expected, and it's due to the veterans and work ethic that spans across the entire side of the ball.
With players like defensive tackle Zach Sieler and linebacker Jordyn Brooks setting the standard for that work ethic, there are others who have bought into the physical nature of what head coach Jeff Hafley has also been preaching. In fact, Hafley spoke about defensive tackle Jordan Phillips being a player who could be the unsung hero of the defense.

Phillips is heading into his second year with the team, and the growth that he continues to show has been impressing Hafley and the coaching staff.
Phillips started in 16 games and appeared in 17 games during his rookie season in 2025, securing 34 total tackles.
Now, Phillips is expected to be responsible for far more in 2026, and Hafley stated that he may not get the credit he deserves for the kind of physicality that he has.
"I think Jordan is a guy who is not going to get enough credit because he kind of plays a position where the limelight's not going to be on him," Hafley said. " He's going to be taking on double teams. He's going to be doing the grunt work and keeping the linebackers clean and pushing the pocket, and you know the stats might not be there but the cool thing about him is he just he embraces that role.

If Phillips can take a big leap in Year 2, it will bode very well for the Dolphins' defense. Additionally, his ascent gives the roster another big boost in terms of the youth movement taking over.
Miami is expected to start many rookies in 202 6, and having many second- year players in prominent roles as well. Phillips can set another standard for the younger players by showing what it means to work hard through the "grunt work."
"I mean he is one of the toughest uh most physical most driven guys that I've been around and usually that's one of the hard positions to play," Hafley added.
Hafley has been preaching a culture of details, process, and physicality, and Phillips appears to be one of the players who embody that culture. If the rest of the roster can continue buying into this ideology, the Dolphins could be far more competitive than everyone expects them to be.

Granted, Hafley will still have to showcase his coaching skills to get this roster in shape, but there are solid pieces on both sides of the ball, like Phillips, who can get things rolling in a significant way once the regular season begins.
Additionally, with Kenneth Grant out for the first four games, this also gives Phillips an even bigger opportunity to set himself up as the leader in the defensive line room, apart from Sieler.
Having a strong defensive line will also lead to more opportunities for turnovers and a defense that can stop the run and set the offense back up to succeed even more.
